Obituary of Suresh Verghese

Suresh Verghese, 54, entered eternal life November 6, 2019 after a courageous battle with cancer.  He was born in India on November 7, 1964 to Antony and Thangamma Verghese and grew up in Ethiopia and Nigeria.  Suresh graduated from the College of Medicine at the University of Lagos.  He migrated to Canada where he met his wife Anita.  They moved to the United States where Suresh completed his medical training in Baltimore, Maryland.  Suresh and Anita welcomed their beautiful twin sons in April 1997.  He was a wonderful father and friend to them.

Suresh worked as an Internist in Fort Washington, Maryland for 17 years. He was a great doctor and dearly loved his patients.

He was most happy being amongst his family and friends - cracking jokes and treating them to a variety of ethnic foods.  Suresh had a passion for food.  He especially liked Indian (Kerala) and Ethiopian food and loved to cook and entertain. He was also a multi-linguist able to communicate in 5 languages.

Suresh was an extrovert and wore his heart on his sleeve. He loved having conversations with new acquaintances from all walks of life and making them feel like life-long friends.

He enjoyed swimming, biking, and running (his version of a mini-triatholon) in the early hours of the morning before work.   Suresh loved music and playing guitar and would always play “Happy Birthday” to his family, friends and patients on their birthday.

He is survived by his wife, Anita and their sons, Anthony and Mathew; his sister, Shalini Verghese and her husband Dave Howard and sons, Arul and Navin; his in-laws, Dr. Mathew and Alice Joseph; his brother-in-law Joe Joseph; his brother-in-law and wife, Paul and Carolyn Joseph and their children, Asha and Tai.

He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, friend and a caring physician.  He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.  We will especially miss his passion for life.

Anita, Anthony and Mathew would like to extend our deep gratitude to all our family and friends for their prayers, love and support.  We are also so grateful to the doctors and staff at Georgetown University Hospital who provided loving care to Suresh during his illness.

We are grateful to God and all his glory and the many blessings that he has granted us.

A Memorial service will be held at St. Thomas a Becket Catholic Church in Reston, VA on Saturday, November 16th.
