Obituary of Carol Ellen Heinberg
Carol Ellen Heinberg, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away on December 15, 2019 at her home in Ashburn, Virginia.
Carol was born in Brooklyn but spent most of her early years in Valley Stream, New York. She was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Ruth Cohen. Having received her Bachelor’s Degree from Adelphi University, she went on to become a high school English teacher in Beacon, New York. She also spent countless hours editing publications and volunteering at her synagogue and her daughters’ schools, as well as meticulously planning many local charitable events and completing The New York Times crossword puzzles.
Friends and family will remember her for the courage she demonstrated as the Parkinson’s and dementia progressed during recent years. Carol loved English literature and poetry, and often helped loved ones with their grammar (whether requested or not), even in her last months. She enjoyed taking many vacations to Paris and Hawaii and living in Poughkeepsie, New York and Austin, Texas before moving to Virginia.
Carol is survived by her husband and high school sweetheart of 56 years, Gary; their nearby children, Melanie Wine (husband Brad and their children Rachel and Carson) and Suzanna Strier (husband Gregory and their children Lindsey, Allison, and Justin); her sister Barbara Messing (and husband Joel) of Connecticut; and brother Alan Cohen of Massachusetts.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to help find a cure for Parkinson’s Disease via the Michael J. Fox Foundation at www.michaeljfox.org or the Brain Support Network at www.brainsupportnetwork.org.
Memorial services will be held at Adams-Green Funeral Home located at 721 Elden Street in Herndon at 11AM on Wednesday, December 18, 2019.
