Eulogy for Mass at Our Lady of Hope Church
March 28, 2020
Today we honor our beloved Mother, Harriet McGuire and although we are small in numbers here, family and friends are watching and praying and with us in spirit.
Mom, you lived a colorful life and in recognition of this we are wearing bright colors today, a day which also happens to be your 89th Birthday.
We want to celebrate all of your many years here on earth: the early years with your family - The McIntyre clan, growing up in Brooklyn, with your sisters Ellen and Doris and your brother Sonny. The years when you met dad, the love of your life, even when he was deployed with the Army and your only correspondence was through the many letters you wrote to each other, the letters we tried to read to you but dad’s handwriting is like a secret code only the two of you could decipher.
The early years of your marriage when dad was getting his undergraduate, master’s and doctorate degrees and you were raising Tim, Tom, James, and Maureen with few resources, but still managed to make their birthdays and holidays memorable and from Rodman Street to Earles Court Road, where Helen and I rounded out our family of eight. Even on to the retirement home you built on Ministerial Road. The years you worked as a Real Estate agent for century 21 and helped so many families find homes in Wakefield and Narragansett, like Tom & Colleen.
We recall the laughter, the happy times, the summer trips of our youth to Narragansett beach and Rocky Point Park, and the long road trips to Florida in the brown paneled station wagon, the trip to a very frozen Niagara Falls. For Maureen, Helen and myself, we have the countless memories of the sabbatical we took around the country for Dad’s research, those long months in a small camper and the side trips we took with you to the eye opening city of New Orleans, the Caverns of Sonora, Mount Rushmore, the Alamo, the herd of Elk we almost collided with in North Dakota, the steep hills of San Francisco we almost didn’t climb, and the majestic Red Wood Forest.
We call to mind the holiday celebrations all together, especially the Thanksgivings with Doris, Ellen & Uncle Paul and the Christmas buffets after the midnight masses, the birthdays, the graduations, the annual 4th of July reunion parties which sometimes took crazy turns but were always fun, the weddings, and the births of the grandchildren. Your Saturday ritual of going to yard sales with Lee Passeroni, and stashing your treasures into the basement and your love of baking and singing. I remember fondly the country music concerts with you at the Warwick musical tent and the bus trips to NYC every year before Christmas.
We remain in awe of your strength: born in the middle of the great depression (you developed a love for collecting), raising six children, the financial struggles and coupon clipping, surviving a brain tumor and surgery, and finally battling dementia. Over the years you listened, and guided us through our own family struggles, encouraged our dreams, you babysat and took the grandchildren camping and on trips to Disney. You partnered with and cared for dad for all of those years and especially at the end of his life when he succumbed to cancer.
Your greatest joys were the visits, calls, and gifts from your family, singing, and traveling: the camping trips and various adventures with your sisters, Ellen and Doris; the trips to Florida and other vacations and cruises with dad; and visiting your children who had inexplicably left your beloved Rhode Island. I hope you’ll eventually forgive me for me for moving you to Virginia.
There’s a Don Bousquet cartoon from the book you gave me that comes to mind when I think of how fondly you felt about Rhode Island. A woman is standing in heaven with her husband, the pair of them have wings and halos, and she says to him, “It’s nice, I guess, but it’s no Rhode Island.”
We will miss you so much mom! But we can find some peace in believing that after nine long years apart, you’ve finally been reunited with Dad, and that in heaven you’ve been made whole and regained your memories. Just know that here on earth we will keep you fondly in ours and in our hearts.
Love, your family.

To all of you,
I have often thought of your mom throughout the years. She was a caring & generous woman, and a dear friend to my mother. Finally they are together again, hopefully sipping tea & catching up with their circle of friends from years past.
Michael & I wish you peace & comfort with all the memories you hold deep in your heart, and we look forward to reminiscing with all of you, once she is brought back to RI. In the meantime, take care and be well. You are in our thoughts & prayers.
With our deepest sympathy & love,
Michael & Claudette Downey

Mom, I thank you for all the happy memories. Family dinners, trips and holidays. There were trips in the station wagon to visit far off relatives or interesting sites. Our holidays were festive and joyful. Thanksgiving brought our aunts, uncles and cousins. A joyous and boisterous houseful. They were happy family times. I remember St. Patrick’s Day when you would turn our food green. You served green chicken noodle soup, mashed potatoes and spaghetti. On Easter we would have egg hunts and basket hunts. I remember walking in the yard to see what flowers were coming up. You taught me many useful skills and life lessons. You adored my husband and our daughters. They were loved and spoiled by you. You were always willing to help make our lives happy and comfortable any way you could. We enjoyed many laughs and much love through the years. I will miss you. I love you! Maureen

This is the view from our living room looking out to the fields from the forest. Mom's rocker is our guest chair. She started the Ti plant when she was pregnant with me (Tim) it is just a little older than 65 years. Absent from the photo is one of Dad's green cut leaf maples. It usually sits on the sill behind the rocker but is currently outdoors being treated for mites. They are here with us to start and end every day.
