To Uncle Steve a person who always shared his kindness and passion with everyone; I will forever cherish the memories of laughter and joy of summers at the Whitcomb house filled with golf, ice cream, and jokes. Uncle Steve showed me the importance of trying new things, to put yourself out there without fear of expectation, to be yourself with your full heart and to always make time for laughter.
Forever in our memories,
Katlyn, Thuy, and Roger

When I was out of college with no job and nowhere to go, Steve took me in and gave a roof over my head, warm bed to sleep… I stayed with Steve and Anh for few months until this bird could fly. Thank you so much for your kindness when I needed the most.

I send my condolences to the family! Steve was kind, very intelligent, and always smiling. He will truly be missed. Though I have worked with Steve off and on for about 15 years we began to work closely with one another over the last 8 months. He really taught me a lot. I could always expect a call after our daily 8:30 meeting to discuss work and to just chat. I spoke with him the evening before his passing and as always he was in good spirits, asked how my family and I were doing, and let me know that he was happy that his whole family was home and everyone was doing well. It was truly an honor knowing Steve, he was truly a great man. I will miss our conversations and all the laughs.

Steve was my brother and a dear friend, especially in the last seven years. There were some years where we weren't in communication much, but we reconnected in the last half of this decade in particular.
I will miss his generosity and his willingness to engage with me in all types of dialogue. He was great about participating along with me in events that were important to me.
I invited him to the D.C. Green Festival, which I was affiliated with. It wasn't something he normally would go to, but he happily attended it with me. He even went with me to an interfaith event in D.C. led by Louis Farrakhan. It wasn't either of our regular scenes, but I wanted to attend to learn and Steve willingly went along for the experience.
I also have fond memories of visiting Steve and his family at his lovely home in Virginia. He had made a great life there.
I know that Steve will be missed by the whole extended family as well, especially by his two great kids Matt and Courtney.

These are photos of my brother Steve, his daughter Courtney and my fiance Alexis. We had some great times together in New York City when he and Courtney came to visit several years ago. There is one selfie photo of Steve and I at a Broadway show. And you might guess the old B&W photo of the baby is of Steve, way before the mustache. :)

I was so sad to hear of Steve’s passing. Steve and I both started our working careers at BDM in 1984, and we worked closely together since 2001. Steve was always a hard worker and never settled for just good enough. He always saw other dimensions to whatever it was he was working on, and always delved deeper and worked harder to make sure his projects were as good as they could be. Steve was also a loyal and supportive colleague. No matter what the assignment was, you knew you could count on Steve to do his part, and you also knew that if someone else on the team got in trouble, Steve would jump in to help. That’s just the way Steve was.
I can’t begin to count the number of programs Steve and I worked on together, and how he always made such a positive difference, but one recollection in particular, stands out. It was after 9/11, and we were working on a new airport passenger screening architecture. The stakes were high, and at one point some of our government reviewers were questioning key decisions that I had been responsible for. The questioning was getting tougher and tougher, and finally at one point, I was just at a loss. I could feel the air going out of the room and thought we had just lost the project, and that’s when Steve stood up and answered the question. He saved the day and the program for us in that moment. I’ll never forget it.
But more than Steve’s professional qualities, he was just a good person. In all the time I knew Steve, I don’t think I remember him ever saying anything bad about anyone. And when my younger son moved to Appleton, Wisconsin, I remember thinking that if the rest of the people there were half as nice as Steve, he’d be in good company.
And so it’s with a sad heart that I write this. My deepest condolences to Anh, Courtney, and Matthew, and all those who knew and loved Steve.

I had the pleasure of knowing Steve through work for about 18 years. From the time I first met him, he was always a great colleague. Over the years, however, I realized that he was much more than that. He was a genuinely nice, kind person that was always there to listen, offer advice, and do his best to be helpful to those around him. Each time I think of Steve, a new happy memory comes to mind, like when we played together in a golf tournament about 15 years ago, or our chats in his car on the way to the terminal at Reagan airport where he dropped me off on Thursdays after our customer meetings for several years. It is a real tribute to the kind of man Steve was that so many colleagues past and present from various organizations have been affected by his loss. I and many other people will miss Steve, but no one will miss him more than his family, to whom I offer my deepest condolences during this very difficult time.

It's so sad that Steve is gone. He was a credit to our profession and a credit to humanity. Steve was hard worker, passionate, and dedicated to TSA's mission. And he was always dedicated to his mission of being kind and caring. We all knew how much his family meant to him; it was always a topic of conversation. Even in the rocky moments, Steve was always a class act and able to respect others' point of view, even if he didn't agree. His enthusiasm, dedication, and kindness will be missed by all of us. I extend my prayers to his family.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Steve's sudden passing. Steve and I worked together since early-2000. He was a calm and thoughtful colleague who could always be depended on. In more recent years, Steve was my manager and he and I shared many a conversation and some good laughs while exploring interesting lunch spots in the Chantilly, VA area. My heartfelt condolences go out to Steve's family. I wish them peace, strength, and fond memories.

I had the honor of working with Steve for the last 10 years. With offices next to each other, we would walk to lunch on an almost daily basis and discuss whatever was going on during that time. I always found Steve to be an extremely hard worker, a great person to bounce ideas off of, and someone I looked forward to seeing and talking to each day. Steve left a lasting impression on me and his contributions to our team will never be forgotten.
My deepest condolences to the Whitcomb family. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time.

This photos of Steve was taken in 2015 at the Chantilly office. The team had to have pictures and, for consistency, it was easier just to have them done in the same place. It was like "Picture Day" at school - everyone dressed nicely and lots of smiles. Steve was a key member of the team, as well as a tremendous colleague and friend. His thoughtful approach, combined with a natural curiosity, led to long hours at the office, but he enjoyed the challenge of problem solving. Steve's vast knowledge and warm sense of humor will be sorely missed by those who knew him - whether it was for a few years or a few decades.
