OBITUARY | Steven Whitcomb, 1958-2020

Kind-hearted, dedicated, loving, warm, and hard working. These are just a few words to describe Steven Whitcomb. Steven, or Steve as he liked to be called, passed away of an unexpected heart attack at 7:17 a.m. on Thursday, May 21, 2020. He was born in Menominee, Michigan in 1958. Steven moved around several times as a child, but spent most of his youth in Edina, Minnesota and Appleton, Wisconsin.

Steve spent much of his youth in Minnesota spending time with his older sister Cindy. He was always adventurous, making many camping and boating trips with his family around the state.

As a youth, Steve was active and involved in several team sports, including baseball, hockey and golf. He also loved cooking with his mother. They would bake bread and she would cook his favorite curry with a special chutney, that he would always reflect and speak of with a strong sense of nostalgia. As a teen, he also enjoyed playing neighborhood pickup games of football and basketball in Wisconsin, along with his younger brother Scott. Steve learned early-on about his passion for golf when his father started taking him to the local golf course.

Steve loved the outdoors and always spoke fondly of the time he rode his bicycle across the country. He also loved to work with his hands. Steve even worked at a fire truck manufacturing plant before college and during the summers while he was in school. Steve graduated from The University of Wisconsin-Stout in 1984 with a Bachelor’s of Science (BS) degree in Applied Mathematics.

Steve worked as an Aviation Security Operations Research Manager, providing analysis modeling, simulation and software development services for aviation security customers. Steve was married at Falls Church Presbyterian on November 7, 1987. He was married for 33 years.

Steve continued his love of sports as an adult. He played volleyball on a team and enjoyed playing table tennis every week with his best friend Tim Harvey. Steve had talked about teaching golf to youth when he retired.

Steve loved people and would have conversations with just about everybody and anybody. He was a very loving father to his children and would always want hugs. Steve not only said he wanted the best for them, but he showed it with action as well. He was always there for them when they needed him. Steve was a loving, kind soul with a smile as warm as the sun.

In March 2020, he was introduced to Ken Tucker and found his faith at McLean Bible Church. In the short amount of time he had on this earth, he was able to make friends and learn more

about himself. Steve would always say, “We are always learning and changing and there’s never a time where we stop.”

Steve is survived by his wife, Anh, his daughter, Courtney, and his son, Matthew. He is also survived by members of his birth family, including his mother, Gretchen, his older sister, Cindy and his younger brother, Scott.
