I was extremely fortunate to know John as my dorm mate at Frederick College in 1967-1968. While iur time together was only a few months, i was blessed to travel to Covington to meet his family and beautiful fiance, Jeanne. John was a beautiful, kind person who truly cared for others. He was also one heck of a great athlete. I will always remember cruising with him in his ‘65 GTO. My heart is heavy with his passing...the world lost a terrific guy. See you in heaven John.

It's well known that John was an avid golfer, and I had pleasure of joining him on the golf course on many occasions. There is an old saying that golf does not build character, it reveals it. The last time I saw John was when we played golf in late June. When I saw him arrive at the course, it was clear that his illness and treatments had left him weak and emaciated. He had not played for a long time. On the first tee, his drive barely went 25 yards. Everyone in the group urged him to hit another one. Under the circumstances, it would have been more than justified. I admit that I would have done it, without hesitation. But not John. He played golf like he lived his life -- with honor and integrity. From now on, when I am tempted to take a Mulligan, I'll think about John. I'll still do it, but I'll feel guilty in not living up to his example. John and Jeanne were among our first friends after we moved to Virginia in 1977. When bought our first house, Jeanne guided us through the all of real estate procedures, and John, Jeanne, and then-little Mark showed up on moving day to help carry boxes. My last contact with John was in late July on behalf of my son whose job required to know something about VA Health Care. John responded with several detailed text messages -- just the information that was needed. There is so much to admire about John, but his willingness to help others stands out. As a veteran myself, I appreciate his lifetime of dedication to helping veterans and their families. Jeanne, Mark, and Kevin and your families, please know that your are in our thoughts and prayers.

John was an amazing boss, co-worker and friend. He was so kind, friendly and had such an infectious laugh. I worked with him at the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs and although he left on a sour note (not his doing), which I was furious about, he laughed at it and told me not to worry about it. He always cared so much about others. He is one of a kind. You will be far pressed to find another person like him. Unique and genuine and I loved him. Know that he touched so many others like he did me. Prayers for comfort to everyone during this time.

I got to know John sometime around 2001, when I worked with him on Capitol Hill. I immediately was drawn to his unique and eclectic sense of humor, duty, and hard work. John was always exactly what he appeared to be: a father, a veteran, and a working stiff who never forgot where he came from. Working together, I really came to admire his deep subject matter knowledge and his folksy wisdom. He was naturally skeptical, but he always maintained his internal moral compass and never succumbed to cynicism. His stories were awesome and usually hilarious. Sometimes, when he talked about his experiences in Vietnam, they were sobering. Anything John told you, you could take to the bank. He told it like it was, and while he had tact, he would make sure he told the truth, no matter who you were or how uncomfortable that truth might be. I will miss him and his determined spirit. His virtues live on in the lives of his Jeanne, and his kids/grandchildren. Farewell, friend.

Jeanne, I am so sad to learn of John’s passing. I will forever remember the fun and happy times at both Dunlap and Alleghany High. There is no doubt that he was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather to your family. May God richly Bless your family and to my friend John, “Thanks for the memories”. Wendell Alfred

I have been so sad since hearing of John's passing, but also, when I remember him, I laugh, because we shared many of the same nerdy humor and we would laugh together about some of the most ridiculous things. I will always remember and most of my remembrances will bring me smiles.
I hope you draw comfort from joyful and beautiful times you have shared with John. My thoughts and prayers are with you all as you mourn.

Sending love and warm condolences from Colorado. Uncle John will be sorely missed. He was a wonderful person and such an enthusiastic cheerleader for people. John was incredibly generous with this affection and affirmations; I plan to emulate that in my own relationships as it had such a lasting affect on me. I am forever grateful to have the warm memories from our time together. My thoughts are with everyone during this difficult time. -Anna
