Suaan, Sally, Tom, and John: Your mother will be greatly missed. She was a wonderful friend to Mom, a great comfort to those in the hospital, a second Mom to me, and an active part of Herndon for as long as I can remember. She was an interesting and outspoken woman who raised a crew of really great children. Those of us who were lucky enough to know her will keep her in our memories for years to come. My daughters have often heard that their tendency to love tree climbing and scare me half-to-death with their dare devil ways are a direct result of your mom's curse - "I hope your children grow up to be just like you!"

It was my fortune to meet Emilie about 23 yeara ago and to become one of her many friends. Before I moved to VT in 2007, I would see Emilie at least once a week, giving her rides and attending the Elden St. Players productions with her. When she decided that she wanted a cat, she asked for my help. The rescue group I belong to had a delightful green-eyed candidate named Lucas. It was love at first sight, she renamed him Chester and he was with her till the end. When I called her, she would tell me how happy he made her. He was 'tucking her in' at night and watching till she went to sleep. Emilie and I spent some holidays together, always so much fun because of her presence. Emilie was so proud of her family and she delighted in showing her friends the latest pictures. Having lost my own 96-year-old mother recently, I know how sad this is for the family who loved her so much. It is indeed very sad for all of her many friends, too. Noble has been waiting for her since 1994, so I know they are happy with each other once again. We will always have the wonderful memories they left us. God Bless Emilie and all who loved her.

I have so many fond memories of visiting the McDaniel household as a young girl growing up in Herndon, and I don't think I really appreciated the wonderful childhood I had in Herndon until many years later. Emily's door was always open to anyone who wanted to stop by and she was one of my Mom's (Jane Hawthorne) dearest friends. May God bestow his blessings on this wonderful extended McDaniel family whom I know will greatly miss their mother and grandmother who cared so much for her loved ones and did so much for others and her community. With sincerest condolences from our family to yours, Anne and Jane Hawthorne, Dick Hawthorne, and Allyn Hawthorne Trautman

Sally, I'm so sorry to hear of your mother's death. I saw her at Bobby Keys's memorial service a few years ago and greatly enjoyed talking to her for quite a while. I always appreciated the Fortnightly Club since my house was just a few doors up from the "library." I read lots of the National Geographics and checked out many of the books. To recognize a community need and to simply fill it with no thought of getting government money to do so is so typical of that generation-we should all be so motivated. And, of course, all through high school and college I worked at the pool; your mom's efforts benefitted me personally in a variety of ways. Though we are scattered everywhere now, our "Herndon community" is much diminished by her passing. Fondly, Gayle
