When I think of Larry Dolgoff, I think of a few key moments where his words and actions changed my life. I met Larry when I was just three years old, and living across the hall from the Dolgoff family in Bonn, Germany.
It was the winter holiday season one year, and I was very excited about our Advent wreath and Christmas tree, and I asked Larry why the Dolgoff family didn't have a Christmas tree. Rather than just telling me, Larry invited me across to the apartment, sat me down at the big dining room table, and proceeded to teach me the story of Hanukkah, the dreidel game, and how to spin for gelt. I think of Larry every time I hear the Dreidel song. Over the years, he kept telling me things about the Jewish faith and stories of Judaism, and I like to think that, starting that one day, he decided to take me under his wing and make sure I always felt comfortable asking questions, but also that I sought how to better understand different cultures and faiths.
Second, while we were all living in that same apartment building, I decided to pick every one of the irises Larry had so lovingly planted lining the back patio of the Dolgoff apartment. I wanted to take them back to my sandbox and make "jam." My mother caught me chopping the irises all to bits on the bench of my sandbox, realized what had happened, asked me if I had permission to take the flowers, and, when I finally admitted I had not, had me bag up all the flowers and stems, march across to the Dolgoff's front door, and apologize while handing him the bag. He approached the conversation with a great deal of seriousness -- I'm sure he was sad about the flowers, but I think he might have been pouring it on juuuuuust a little bit to make sure I learned my lesson. I did learn that lesson, and I feel a twinge of guilt whenever I pick a flower in anyone's yard, even if I'm invited to do so.
Finally, I remember reaching out to Larry and Elaine when I was a young reporter covering their community of Reston. I needed a few stories of love from couples in Reston for a Valentine's spread, and when I called them up, Larry said I didn't even know what I was getting into, and I should come right over, because they had a GREAT story. I can't believe that in the 20 years I'd known them at that point, I'd never heard of Larry and Elaine's first meeting, their swift falling in love with each other, and their decision to move from just-met to married so quickly -- they were so sure of each other and of what they had. I left that interview smiling so widely -- to know that information just made both Larry and Elaine seem even more magical than they already were. Larry's commitment to family, love, and a lifetime of devotion to the right person was both inspiration to me and joy, and I remain inspired by the lightning perfect timing that brought them together.
I was so sad to hear the news about Larry -- it's like a very specific light has gone out and left everything just a bit dimmer. He was a gift to each one of us, and my memories of him are such a blessing. My deepest condolences to Elaine, Scott, Todd, Ross, and the whole family.

We came to know Larry and his lovely wife Elaine thru Scott and Dede, long-time friends of my son Dana. For decades, we'd see them at least once a year when the Dolgoff families attended the Goldstein's annual holiday dinner party each December. Of course Larry and Elaine could be counted on to show up bearing coolers filled with incredible homemade pies.
What a delightful gentleman - a family man, old school, ever the optimist, always interesting and engaged. Not too many gems come along in a lifetime. You were fortunate to have had one in your midst. He will be missed.
With love,
Mrs. Bobbie Goldstein and family

Dolgoffs: My heartfelt condolences on the loss of a dear friend.
We (the Oliver Shaws) met your family in Tokyo in the mid-70s when Ollie worked for Larry at the American Embassy.
And where we lived in Grew House where the kids never lacked for playmates. I still remember Ross ringing our doorbell
asking if Pat could come out to play! (FYI: Grew House complex was modernized and updated with earthquake-resistant
features.) We've kept in touch throughout the years and saw each other when we came through D.C. A few(?) years
ago, Larry and Elaine came through Albuquerque on the Amtrak and spent a few days with us where we continued the
conversation we left off years ago. I like to think that Larry and Ollie are still continuing up there --- they never lacked for
things to talk about!!
There are so many wonderful memories and stories to share. I hope that family and friends can comfort you at this difficult
time. Mimi joins me in extending our sympathies. Until we all meet again .............. Janet Shaw

Dear Elaine and family: Bob and I have enjoyed knowing Larry throughout our residence at Falcons Landing. I knew to get to the library early or Larry would have all the good books and DVDs already in his hands. He was a delight to converse with and always listened to anything I had to say. I will cherish all the moments he took explaining Hanukah and Passover to me. I will miss you two standing for the Coast Guard song during the military medleys! His visits in the Johnson Center were highlights of the day for some residents. I will always remember his sense of humor combined with a twinkle in his eye and that little grin that said so much without saying a word. May it comfort your hearts to know that many grieve with you and hold him in their hearts as well.
Our sincere sympathy,
Robert and Jane Moser

Dear Ross, Jill and family,
We want to send you our condolences for the loss of your father, Larry. We read his obituary and it is clear his wisdom matched his brilliant intellect. He lived what appears to be an amazing life; served his nation with honor and distinction; saw the world with the love of his life by his side; and must have been Ross and his brothers greatest role model. Ross is definitely a chip off the old block. With deep sympathy and love to all of you,
Andrew and Frances Barrett

I only had the pleasure of meeting your parents once at a dinner prior to one of Henry’s performances. Although they would likely never remember me, I will never forget them. Absolutely amazing people to converse with and I could have sat with them all night. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. I know that it is a tremendous loss. Please know that I am thinking you Ross ( and all of his family) as you regain balance after this incredible jolt. My deepest condolences.

It was an honor to get to know Larry and Elaine at Falcons Landing. Larry frequently visited my father, William Kramer, on his newspaper delivery rounds. Larry and my dad swapped stories about their early days in Brooklyn, Jewish life in the military, and their beloved families. The photo was taken last December when Larry led a Chanukkah celebration for the Falcons community. May Larry's memory bring comfort to you, Elaine.
With Sympathy,
Mimi Kramer-Roberts

Uncle Larry/Lawrence - May your memory be a blessing. I am so blessed that Uncle Larry & Aunt Elaine were able to celebrate with my dad, Jordan, & my mom at my kids bar & bat mitzvahs in 2013 & 2015. I always enjoyed hearing his stories about my dad. I will definitely miss him tons & hope that he meets up with my parents and Jerry & Debby Dolgoff on the other side.

Growing up, Uncle Larry's choice of the foreign service made a big impression on me for other reasons. Every 2 to 3 years, the Dolgoffs would return to the U.S. in the summer and spend 2 weeks with us when we lived in Portola Valley, CA or Englewood, CO. Having sisters, I always loved their visits as Scott, Todd, and eventually Ross became like brothers to me for those 2 weeks. I remember those times fondly, including with Aunt Elaine and Uncle Larry.
We will miss you Uncle Larry!
love to all,
lee

This detailed and eloquent obituary is a wonderful reminder of all that Uncle Larry accomplished in his life, as well as how much he cherished his family. His work in the foreign service helped me to see that international work could be a career path. I very much enjoyed hearing his stories of his many adventures, particularly in Ghana (where I hope to go some day!), the Philippines, and Pakistan. He clearly adored his wife, my Aunt Elaine, and took great pride in his children's success. I am glad that he was able to see the world and had a very pleasant retirement in a beautiful location. Sending love to Aunt Elaine, my cousins, their wives, and the grandkids.
