Betsy and family. I was very sorry to hear about Don's passing. Don was great to work with when I was at USTR. He had excellent judgment, a fun sense of humor and cared deeply about others. During this time of memories, grief and letting go please know that you are all in my thoughts. May his memory be a blessing. Fred Davidson

I have known Don for years and he was the fearless leader of our Nationals seasons ticket group. We all looked forward to our annual "draft" at Don's house where we selected games and divided up the tickets. Don's sense of fairness, enthusiasm and welcoming nature were always apparent, even after his Parkinsons diagnosis. He was a warm, courageous and generous person, who will be missed by all. Sincere condolences to Betsy and the family on Don's passing.

I knew Don for over 30 years. He was my first boss at the US Trade Representative's Office. When our unit was reorganized into two sections and I no longer worked with him, Don, nonetheless, remained my mentor. There was much to learn about USTR and he always took time for me -- to provide much needed background, advice, and a good laugh or two. That's just the kind of guy he was. Over time he and Betsy became close personal friends. After I left USTR, my husband, Michael, and I saw them whenever we were in Washington, and they came to stay with us in Caracas and on Cape Cod. We have wonderful memories of Don: His intelligent, dry, whip-like sense of humor, his warmth, and his sincere caring for the feelings of others. We miss him.

Don Eiss was a close, valued friend for over 30 years. His sharp (wicked?) sense of humor could always be counted on to carry us in Washington and beyond through hard times or troubling policies. And, unlike so many, he actually knew what he was talking about (most especially on trade policy and negotiating strategy, on which he was the acknowledged master). A rare individual – will be missed. We will remain close to Betsy, Stephanie and Matt.

Pat and I are saddened by Don's passing. I met him on his first day at the Treasury in 1978 when I was the State Department liaison on "Tariff Affairs" as they were called then. I was struck immediately by his keen mind, wry sense of humor and genuine gentleness. His New York upbringing and love of baseball didn't hurt, either. When he later joined USTR, I expected those qualities would be an asset to our small agency, and they were. Our heartfelt condolences to Betsy and each member of the Eiss family; may Don's spirit abide with you forever. Charlie and Pat Blum

Dear Betsy and family - Kathryn and I were so sorry to learn of Don's passing. He was a dedicated public servant and colleague, a great friend, and wonderful person. Don was always there to lend a hand to someone in need.
Don had a great sense of humor and somehow was able to keep everything in perspective, sometimes a challenge when one works for the U.S. Government. Like so many others we will miss him.

Betsy: I am so very saddened to read of Don's passing. Although it has been years since we have seen each other, I remember fondly our times working together, and the time (nearly 40 years ago) when you and Don, along with me and my wife Lynne, attended a figure skating professional skating competition. I have been retired myself a little over 10 years now and, while not exactly missing the work, recall easily how much satisfying and worthwhile work we did together. Don was a special person. He will be missed and remembered fondly by many. I wish you strength and peace.

Dear Betsy and Family - We were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Don. I remember fondly working with Don at USTR during the 1980s. He was intelligent, perceptive, collegial, and caring - a consummate professional in every sense. We also remember his annual visits to our house as Santa Claus when our son Christopher was growing up - he was wonderful! I also shared Don’s passion for baseball - in fact, our last extended time together was at a Nats game in 2017. What a joyous day it was. We share your grief at Don’s loss. He, you, and your family will be in our prayers. With deepest condolences, Bruce and Ana Wilson
