I was so sorry to hear about your mother’s passing. She was truly a beautiful person both inside and outside. My mother and she went to the same high school, Blessed Sacrament, and I remember my mother telling us how smart your mother was and how sweet and kind she was to all their classmates. She loved and admired her very much, we all did. I used to think I was named after her until I realized I was born before she was a part of the family! She was an amazing woman and she raised an amazing family.
I will keep you all in my prayers. Take Care.

As I closed the book on 2020, I thought 2021 had to be better. So far 2021 has not started well, at least for me.
I began the new year being infected with Covid-19, followed by mom's death on January 5th. This past Friday morning, I called 911 after finding my wife Uli laying on our kitchen floor having a seizure. I truly thought that I was going to lose her too.
The reason I mention these things is not for pity, but just to point out that God will sometimes allow things to happen in our lives, not to create hardships, but to move us in certain directions that we don’t always understand, at least not at that moment. Many of us say, “why me Lord?”
God challenged my mother at a young age. This young devout catholic mother was blessed with six children in six years before her 30th birthday. Following the break-up of my parents, she found herself alone in a 1200 square foot 3-bedroom home in Pimmit Hills, as the primary parent raising six young children.
At this point in her life, she could have cursed God, fallen into self-pity, maybe even turned to alcohol & drugs, just to cope with the life she now had in front of her. But this is not the way she was raised. She grew up with true love and complete trust in Christ. This was instilled by her loving and supportive parents and siblings. Her faith in God was stronger than anyone I have ever seen.
In Our Lord’s Prayer are the words, “THY WILL BE DONE, ON EARTH as it is in Heaven". My mom knew in her heart what God's will was. And it would be a heavy burden. She regularly prayed to God, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to give her the courage and strength to carry her through.
Mom set an example for me that stuck with me my entire life. I never heard her complain, even though each of her children, myself included, gave her additional challenges and heartache, to say the least.
When I was 17-years old, my older brother Mike and I decided to join the Marine Corp. The only obstacle for me was that my mother would have to sign a waiver due to my age. I remember sitting her down in the living room while I explained to her that I wanted to join the Marine Corp., but needed her signature. My mom was not particularly athletic but she leaped to her feet, snatched the pen from my hand saying, "where do I sign Gerald?" And off we went. Two down, four to go!
Life will not be the same without mom’s sweet face. I’m certain that when she arrived in Heaven on Tuesday morning, Saint Peter moved her to the front of the line and welcomed her as she entered through the gates of Heaven.
I love you and I will see you again!

As the youngest of the family I admired all the time as I was growing up my eldest sibling, Maureen: her good sense, her warmth, her gentleness, her piety, her kindness, her guidance!
I shared those memories of Maureen enumerated by my brother Chris and by my sister Eileen and those memories are precious to me, also! However, there are two sets of memories of Maureen that I would like to add and that stand out to me, as I contemplate my sister's sad passing!
For several months in 1976 I stayed with Maureen and her family in her Pimmit Hills house at a hard time for me as I was thinking of relocating! Maureen was there for me, offering me encouragement and advice at the same time as she was managing job and family schedules. Her days were very busy but she never complained and was there for her kids
Another pleasant memory I have of my eldest sister is a trip we took together to visit our Irish relatives in Ireland and the tour of England, Scotland, and Wales! Maureen charmed the Irish relatives and was always proud of her Irish ancestry and loved Irish music, Irish dancing (which she learned as a child) and all things Irish!
These memories are like flowers that, together with the other memories we each have of her, form a bouquet that she offers to us all. That she has lived is a gift to us all and she will live always in our hearts!

I was the little sister and what a pain in the neck I was. We lived in a NYC apartment with my mom and dad and the five Sullivan kids. I used to wear her clothes, use her makeup and invade her privacy.
Through it all as the years passed she got married and moved to VA and started her family. I graduated from high school, started working and would drive down every few months to see her. I remember arriving at her house close to midnight on a Friday night, peaking into each room to see the six sleeping kids. I am sure I probably woke one or two up and, as exhausted as she was, she had to get them back to sleep. She never said a word; only that warm, gentle smile that made everybody comfortable and welcome.
When I got married and started my family, we celebrated special occasions together as a family with all the cousins. Those were special years and despite the distance between us, we were able to remain close.
Maureen was always my inspiration, my idol and a best friend. She had beauty, class and grace and excelled in her roles as mother, daughter and sister. Her beautiful eyes and soft, gentle smile will be forever etched in my mind.
A devotion to her family and to her God is a life well lived. Rest easy my beautiful sister; your work here is done.

Well Mom, I don't even know where to start when it comes to you. I don't have one negative memory of you. You were always there every single time for any of us. Your gigantic heart was always full of love and faith. You got that from your beautiful mother-my grandmother who raised you the same way you raised us. You would say how your soul has to be ready for God because you never know when its your time, and that this life is so very short and that eternity is what you live your life for.
When we were little, I didn't even know that you had to scrimp and save to take care of us because I never felt that way, ever!
That's because you always made sure we had clothes on our back, dinner on the table and just a sweet loving environment.
you scrimped on yourself because you always wanted us to have more. Mom we always had everything we wanted and needed-YOU. You were always there for us, there is nothing I would change about you. You were about as perfect a mom anyone would ever want.
I will never forget some of your sayings "Lets kill 2 birds with one stone" "Never put all your eggs in one basket" "Don't have a champagne taste on a beer budget" and "work when you can because you never know when you cant" & countless other ones that pop up in my head from time to time. The most important things you would say to us is to always have faith in God and he will get you through the tough times. Mom, I am talking to God more than ever since you left us. Although you are in heaven now, I know you are always watching over us. I already feel your presence and warmth.
Mom, thank you for everything you have taught us, the incredible amount of love you joyfully gave us and faith in God that you instilled in all 6 of us. With Gods grace, I will hopefully achieve the same with my own children. I love you and miss you so much!
Your youngest daughter, Nancy

To my grandma, the sweetest most faithful angel there ever was on Earth, and now in heaven. Lay at peace with our lord and continue to watch over us all until we meet again. My very first memory with my grandma was visiting a circus when I was very young, just her and I watching the all the animals and performers. She bought me a stuffed white horse that I have kept to this day. I will now recognize white horses as a sign you are near and always with us. The Bible recognizes white horses as those who carried Christ, representing the successful spread of the gospel, which I feel you did for many of us here on earth. You will forever be my white horse. Rest in paradise sweet angel, I love you

Maureen: My Sister
The oldest of five Sullivan children born of Irish born parents and living and growing up ,in a 4 story Tenement building in NYC , NY , she HAD a beautiful life.
She was the best looking, the smartest, the most personable , and the most industrious of us all . But she had another quality about her that would rein supreme: she had that something that radiated outwardly that instantly connected with you . What it was ,cannot be defined, but You instantly liked her and wanted her as your friend.
My mother, who had her same personality, would sometimes show me her report card from The Blessed Sacrament School , I guess to inspire me, and I would see all her grades in the upper 90’s and think that’s not possible. But it was ,and I never could come close to her records and never tried. That led to her receiving a scholarship to an exclusive secretarial school..... and on and on.
She got married, had six wonderful children, raised them , and led a beautiful life , with a strong and undivided faith in her God and Church, her family, and community......
I spoke to her by telephone a week or so before her death with one of her daughters on the same line, and although her memory was failing a bit , she was as cheerful and uplifting as ever.
Our family will certainly miss her but we ALL know that we now have another someone in heaven looking out for us.
The next oldest Sullivan,
Chris Sullivan
