I just learned from my ESU magazine that Sylvester passed away. I am so very sorry. He was in my class at EHS (1960). I remember him as a neat kid and a fine saxophonist (I was 1st chair flautist.). His cousin, Maryetta, was my best bud at Lincoln (elementary) School. My deepest sympathy and condolences on our loss...

I was so blessed to know and learn from Sylvester when we worked together at L&F. He always had a smile, a kind word, and deep care for everyone that he touched. It was a gift to see him in the office, and to see how he grew community around him. I am sending much love to his family.

There are a few defining moments in one's life. In those moments, our lives are changed forever, they mold us, pour into us, and at times even challenge us. These types of moments can only be felt within and treated with respect.
I can still feel Uncle Sylvester in my soul...he made me feel as though I could fly. He was to me, what he was to his daughter Kim..(Daddy).
Sylvester had a spirit and a way that he carried himself that could only be admired by most, but I had the gift of having him in my most treasured moments/memories and I always wanted to be just like him. I say this without hesitation and unapologetically.
We all know that time brings about a change and timing is everything, but I thank GOD for allowing us to have time together.
Sylvester, you were a gift of a lifetime, and my love for you comes with a lifetime guarantee! You will truly be missed.
Love,
Stevie

A Tribute to Sylvester L. Tomlin, Jr.
I’ve heard it asked of people...”What is the character of a good man?”
And although I can’t speak for others, it is of my mind that a good man is someone who is inordinately kind, loving, and gentle.
He is someone who is giving of himself. That is what Sylvester (Syl) was to our family.
He was fun, funny, and fun-loving. And yes, I even think that a good man can be someone who is full of interesting quirks and contradictions. Because of all the hilarious things about him, Syl loved to play practical jokes on his family. He was not afraid to enjoy life, and he encouraged everyone else to do so.
Although I am Sylvester’s sister-in-law, the one they call “Cookie”, I truly thought of him as my brother. And so, I like to think that a good man is someone who is like him, and who continuously surrounds themselves with good people. He liked all sorts of interesting and different people. He especially loved exploring new things, traveling to new places, and learning about different cultures. He was a smart man. He studied for a law degree, and earned his doctorate from the University of Kansas. He believed in education, in science, and he loved singing and playing his music.
He also took time to give of himself generously to his family, his friends and those in need. He was a wonderful dad to his daughter Kim, and was a great mentor and stand-in dad to my son, and his nephew Steve. My mother and father were delighted when they finally got Sylvester as the son they never had, which was through his marriage to my dear and beloved sister Doris, who passed away so many years ago. And I have to say, “Thanks to Helena”, for being just the right person for Syl, at just the right time in his life.
So yes, there is no end to the list of things a good man can be.
But there was a man that I know who was good and kind; he was gentle and loving to the many family members and friends that he had.
My Brother-in-Law, Sylvester L. Tomlin, Jr., was indeed such a very good man.
I have been privileged to know him for most of my life. I will miss him.
With forever love and devotion,
Kathy “Cookie” Flemons

Sylvester carried a light that encompassed all, Gentle, kind, fun and funny, a joyful presence in this world. I knew him as both a fellow realtor and a member of Mosaic Harmony.
In 2003 Mosaic Harmony travelled to Germany and Slovenia. Fabulous time! And we watched Sylvester fall in love with Helena. a member of a classical choir in Ljubljana who hosted us.
Sylvester's message?...Let your little light shine!

Sylvester was known within our Long and Foster office for his friendly nature, warm personality, and happy smile. Everyone knew Sylvester -- he never met a stranger. I remember my first encounter with him when I joined the office -- he told me all about his family, and about how much he enjoyed participating in the Marine Corps Marathon. If I needed help with anything real estate related, Sylvester was always happy to lend a hand with a wide smile. Sylvester's ties, socks, and sense of humor were renown in the office. RIP Sylvester.

Sylvester was a man of many talents and had such a positive energy about him. He always had a kind thing to say and had a wonderful way of lifting you up with each encounter. I met Sylvester at L&F's Reston/North Hill office many years ago now and he will always be remembered as a special person I was lucky to have crossed paths with. His special spirit will live on for those who knew him and especially for the family he loved.
