Obituary-Sylvester LaVern Tomlin, Jr.

Loving husband, father, and grandfather, Sylvester L. Tomlin, Jr., PhD, passed away on June 1, 2021. Born on June 5, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, to Willa Mae Craver and Sylvester LaVern Tomlin, his childhood and early adulthood were spent in El Dorado, Kansas.

He received a BA in secondary music education at Wichita State University and an MS in administrative education at Kansas State Teachers College. For three years he was a J.D. candidate at Washburn School of Law in Topeka, KS; then, he returned to the field of education, obtaining a Ph.D. in Developmental and Child Psychology at the University of Kansas, followed by several post doctorate internships, which included an NIMH grant at Boys Town, Nebraska.

After a devoted teaching and administrative career in several Kansas secondary and college school systems lasting for 13 years, he began a real state career in 1983 in Northern Virginia until the present.

Sylvester is survived by his wife Helena Podjed-Tomlin; his son and wife Andrej and Urska Meznarsic and their children Oskar and Jerca of Slovenia; son-in-law Bill Green and his daughter Bella; and five nieces, nephews, and their families. He is predeceased by his mother, father, and three siblings. He is also predeceased by his first wife, Doris Gene Flemons Tomlin, and his daughter, Kimberly Lynn Tomlin.

Sylvester was a man of action and possessed many talents and varied interests. He was most passionate about running the Marine Corps Marathon, which he successfully completed 24 times. He and his wife enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and abroad, especially their yearly trips to Slovenia to visit family. They also travelled several years to China in a Concordia College program and taught English to Chinese adolescents there. Jazz music was always a passion of his. As a young man, Sylvester mastered the saxophone and, in recent years, picked it up again. And for twenty years he enjoyed singing in Mosaic Harmony Community Choir, particularly the annual Spring concerts.

Family and friends will be celebrating Sylvester’s life on Friday, June 25, 2021 at Adams Green Funeral Home.  A visitation will occur between 2:00-4:00 pm followed by the memorial service beginning at 4:00 pm.
