I will always remember Derek as an amazing ball of energy. When I had him in class, he was smart and loving. He had an unremovable smile everyday, and just wanted people to be happy. I always told him that he reminded me of a golden lab...happy and clumsy and he gave me surprise bearhugs randomly, then we would both laugh about it. This is a very sad day. My thoughts are with you, Mrs. Forbes and to the rest of the family.

I was involved with Derek’s education at Burke School. He was a bright light to have in the classroom. Always willing to help with anything asked of him, and always did it with a wonderful smile. He had such and infectious laugh, it makes me smile to think of it.
