Obituary of Mary Beth Gormley

Mary Beth Gormley passed away on Thursday, January 6, 2022 in her Ashburn, VA, home.  Mary was born in St. Louis, MO, of Jack and Cleta “Mona” Orton (deceased).  The oldest of five siblings (Lauren (deceased) (Bobby), Sally, Kevin (Donna) and Kelly), she is survived by her three children (Sean, Matthew (Thuy), and Brienne (fiancé Paul) and five grandchildren (Maggie, Molly, Brinley, Brent and Brendan).  Mary completed her education in Northern VA and worked initially in the Department of Defense.  Following a period devoted to raising her children, she returned to work in the insurance industry until her retirement.  Mary’s first love was her family to which she devoted her boundless energy.  She volunteered extensively in her Annandale, VA, and Fairfax County community and schools and the various activities in which her children participated.  She believed passionately in parent involvement in children’s education and served in a variety of local and state level school Parent Teacher Association positions.  She was elected and served as President of the Virginia State PTA for 1995-1997.  She devoted her later years to activities with family and friends, beach vacations and other travel.  She found particular joy and fulfillment engaging with her grandchildren, who she adored.

The family will receive friends on January 20, 2022 at the Adams-Green Funeral Home, Herndon, VA from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at which time a service celebrating Mary’s life will be held.  Reception immediately following at Cooper’s Hawk Restaurant, Reston, VA.  Donations in Lieu of flowers may be made to the Virginia PTA.
