Father Lord
I call on you today. Please be with me through this
devastating time of my life. It feels as though I've lost
a part of me and the pain is unbearable.
My heart is in pain. My soul is in distress. I feel lost
and empty and all I can do is cry.
Please be my strength and my comfort in this time.

I grew up the youngest child of three – all boys. For most of our childhood, both of my parents worked, which provided us with more freedoms than we deserved. Needless to say, between the three of us we were quite spirited. Particularly when our parents weren't around.
So, when cousin Michael would come up to Connecticut from Delaware to watch us, we were in especially fine form. My first memory of Michael was from Christmas morning when I was about five years old. Michael was visiting for the holidays and my brothers and I were so excited about Christmas, we hardly slept.
At about 6:00am, we decided it was time for presents. Though, we knew our parents might not agree. So instead, we went to our big(gest) brother - Cousin Mike. Naturally, we assumed we may be able to sway Michael by simply jolting him awake. So, we crept into his room and I decided to throw a flying knee to his groin. He let out a short-lived howl, then effortlessly grabbed all three of us with his inhuman strength, and bear hugged us into submission. He wasn’t angry or upset. In fact, he laughed off the pain, explained why we shouldn’t take groin shots, and then entertained us for an hour or two until our parents were ready to start Christmas morning.
Michael was the peacekeeper. He was our fourth brother. And most of all, he wasn’t taking anyone’s bullshit. It didn’t matter if you were five years old or 50 years old. He would bring the pain if you stepped out of line.
But beneath the rough exterior, he was a teddy bear. He was patient, brave, kind, and empathetic. He had outstanding moral character, and he expected the same from those he loved. Heck, he cared more about his loved ones than he cared about himself, and I felt his love for my entire life – near or far.
All this is to say that I hope, wherever he is, that he can read this and know how much we all cherished him. I want him to know that he was an invaluable part of my life. And he was an amazing brother, cousin, husband, and father. Finally, I want him to know that he will be missed dearly, and the Michael-sized void in all of our hearts will not be filled.

Years ago when we first met him, we were touched how he cherished and loved Debbie, then his GF, future wife to be. We could see he loved her deeply, even in the early days. We did not see him often enough, but when we did, he was always of good cheer and made us laugh. I am sorry for your loss, and I am sorry we did not get to spend more time with you both.

Hey Mike:
For half my life, we've been friends, and for several years, you were like my older brother. Countless hours spent doing stupid things, tossing darts, drinking beer, listening to music, working, and just being dudes. I'll miss being able to txt you some inane garbage to make you laugh and have you respond with something equally silly. You cared so much for those around you and always made us laugh. I can't believe you're gone.
