Ah Marianne, I miss you.
I worked with Marianne in the Costco Legal/Real Estate group since 2007/2008 (her first round with Costco). What an incredibly smart, talented, inspirational person to be around. We've all been passing by your empty office for the last year, wishing you were doing well and coming back to us soon. The zoom calls didn't do you justice. All of us wanted to be with you in person, to bounce ideas off of you; to get your advice on work or kids; to talk about our crazy dog stories; to hear about your travel escapades skiing or biking or traveling the world. And I miss the Sun Valley and Seattle work trips where we all got to relax and cut loose together. I'm so happy that you got to do one last trip to Italy with your family.
You will be missed. On to your next journey.

I worked with Marianne at McGuire Wood for a few years and later, would run into her at Flint Hill School events and hear updates about her and her family from Michele Krisko. Such a sweet person, I remember Marianne so fondly. Wishing Marianne's husband, sons and extended family peace with this transition, what a tremendous loss.

After the initial shock of hearing this awful news wore off, I just felt heartbroken for Marianne and her family. I had not been in touch with Marianne very often after she left The Mills and always regretted it. Because her office was always the place I would go to, ostensibly for a legal question but I would always linger afterwards just to talk to her. About anything and everything. Sports or politics or something crazy going on at work, it would always be entertaining and funny and I’m sure I wasted so much of her time but she was always so gracious about it. She was sorely missed by everyone when she left/escaped and moved to Costco.
Marianne’s legacy will be all of the lives she touched along the way in her too brief time on earth. I can only speak for myself and the other Mills friends I spoke to in the past week to say we are all just gutted by this and send our deepest sympathies to Marianne’s family.

It’s hard to know where to start a tribute that could last hours, days and years. She saw the best in everyone and was that rare friend with whom you could always share your worst - without judgment (instead you would be met with compassion, and at times, a fierce sense of humor). She had a measured tolerance for stupidity- at least, the first time. She was brave and loyal. And smart and kind and oh, so funny. And fun to be around. She was the person who talked to the person in the room who felt out of place or lonely or unable to decide what to buy a relative (or spouse) for a birthday or anniversary. She may not have loved your sport team, but she knew their stats. She remembered your birthday. She sent condolence cards. It was never too much trouble for her to welcome another person at the table. She loved a good story and found the time to hear every detail. She made difficult things look easy- which is why for so many of us when we try to repeat them, whether they be recipes or legal documents, they lack the same impossibly high quality. She made fighting cancer look like another day at the office- she was not daunted by adversity; she fought with dignity and grace She was an amazing mentor, colleague, and friend, and she continuously inspired everyone she knew and met. She will be deeply missed, and we will remember and try in her honor - to keep our powder dry.

Dear Bundren and Gavlak Families,
I worked on Costco projects in Georgia with Marianne for many years. She was compassionate, strong and diligent. She negotiated with an incredibly sweet demeanor and bulldog resolve - not easy to do. Everything about Marianne instilled love and respect. She will be truly missed.
