Obituary of Beddie Joan Decker

Please share a memory of Beddie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Beddie J. Decker passed away peacefully on the morning of March 2nd, 2023. She was born August 22nd, 1941, to Worley Jordan and Etta Mae Holbrook.

Beddie was born in the town of Coeburn, Virginia where she was raised along with her eight siblings. She attended Castlewood High School where she played basketball and enjoyed Elvis Presley and country music. Beddie moved to Vienna, Virginia in 1959 where she worked as a waitress at Vienna Inn and later met her husband, Roy Grant Decker. They were married on December 20th, 1963, in Arlington. She became stepmother to Darlene, David, Grant Jr. and Dennis. Together, Beddie and Grant made their home in the Herndon/Reston area and welcomed their three children, Donald, Derrick, and Dawn.

She retired from Fairfax County food service after eighteen years of providing meals and nutrition education to the next generations. She was recognized with an outstanding performance award for her dedication to her students’ nutritional needs. She also spent twenty-five years at Vienna Woods Swim and Tennis Club, including several years along with her daughter Dawn, feeding members and educating young adults in skills needed as they entered their first job. Her granddaughters, Sara and Hanna, being two of those teenagers that benefited from her example of hard work. Lea looks forward to following in her footsteps this summer.

She loved traveling to the beach with her friends and family as much as she could. Beddie also enjoyed her soap operas, especially the Young and the Restless, after work and into retirement as well as spending Sunday afternoons watching the Washington Redskins (now Commanders). Every evening we could count on hearing Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune come on from her spot in the kitchen. However, her greatest enjoyment came from spending time with her granddaughters; taking them shopping and to get their nails done.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Beecher, Leon, Jack, sisters Evelyn, Merle and husband of 29 years, Grant. Beddie is survived by her brothers Joe (Florence), Rodger (Mary Ruth), and sister Bonnie (Ralph). As well as her stepchildren Darlene (Mike), David (Nancy), Grant Jr. (Susan), and Dennis, her children Donald (Ben), Derrick (Vanessa), and Dawn (James), her three granddaughters Sara (Matthew), Hanna (William) and Lea and her great granddaughter, Charlotte. Additionally, there are many surviving nieces, nephews, and other much-loved members of her family.
