Joan Mae Dempster, age 90, of Herndon, VA passed away on April 3, 2023 after a battle with Alzheimer's.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Tom Dempster, her brothers Bob and Paul and her twin sister, Joyce Horner.  She is survived by her children, son Chris  and daughter Megan, her granddaughter Delilah as well as her brothers Duane and Norris and her sisters Marge Perkins and Carole Banzhaf.

Joan was born in Cambridge, Nebraska on May 6, 1932 as one of eight children to Charles and Eva Smith.  As the story goes, her dad was very proud of the fact that he had twins and he loved them to be dressed alike (maybe even insisted on it).  When she was a secretary she met Tom at their place of work and they married after only knowing each other for four months!  And when Tom got the opportunity to work in Pakistan she was brave enough to say let's go even though they had two very young children at the time (one was still a baby).

She lived a very full life that was rich with love, family and friends.  She absolutely loved traveling to the annual Smith family reunions, the sister trips, the yearly spring beach trips with family, different places with Tom, to visit her son, daughter-in-law (Vicki) and granddaughter, Ireland with her daughter and nieces, and various places with her daughter and many other trips she took.

She was quick with a smile, a laugh, a helping hand and loved being around people just having a good time - for her the more the merrier.  Besides her love of her family and friends, her other love was golf.  She was an avid golfer and you could find her on a golf course on many days - not much stood in the way of her tee time.  She was an extremely creative woman that included art and sewing anything and everything which she actually turned into a home business for a few years.  She was an intelligent person who loved daily crossword puzzles and reading everything including the daily newspaper from front to back.

She touched many lives and will be greatly missed.  She would want each of you to find a happy memory with her and keep that close to your heart.
