James David Stone passed into the arms of the Lord on July 24, 2023.  He arrived in this world on December 11, 1961, an early Christmas present for his family that year.  Bent Mountain in Roanoke County, VA would be his home for the next 18 years. A 1980 graduate of Cave Spring High School, David followed in the family tradition and became a lifelong member of the Hokie Nation, graduating with a degree in business. His career would take him to Northern Virginia where he worked in finance for several businesses including First American, Freddie Mac and Navy Federal.

David’s career was fulfilling, but nothing like being a husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend. In 1989, David met his life partner, Pam Heath, and their loving marriage produced two daughters, Lauren and Shelby. Then in 2021, another bright light arrived in David’s life, his granddaughter, Adalyn. David doted on his girls. The family worked together, played together, and traveled together. David especially loved going to Nats games with all of his girls, and coaching his daughters in softball, basketball, and volleyball.

All through his early years, David had a strong love for his friends and family in Roanoke and his beloved Bent Mountain.  He developed an appreciation for all of his childhood experiences, for his family, and for his friends, both young and old. Growing up in a rural close-knit community with his Dad owning a gas station, David met many fine people and some true characters.  He developed a keen sense of humor and this had to be the reason that he could quote any line from THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW to fit any situation. Also, this was likely the reason that he never met a stranger.  Watching and participating in sports was a large part of David’s life. He played baseball and softball and could remember stats from all sports with the greatest of ease. His parents would take him to Cincinnati as a young boy where he happily cheered on the Big Red Machine.

David was predeceased by his parents, Allen and Ruby Stone. We know that he is joyfully connecting the links of the chain broken years ago with their passing, as well as with his relatives and friends that have gone before him.

David is survived by Pam, Lauren, Shelby (Dylan) and Adalyn. Also surviving are his brother, George (Helen), and sister, Dana (Rod), his sisters-in- law, Stephanie (Mark), Shirley (Doug), Barb (Gary), and brother-in-law, Larry (Sue) and many saddened nephews and nieces. Also surviving is his aunt, Mary Reba Craighead and his cousins.

Although he loved his Sterling friends and neighbors, David was truly a Bent Mountain boy. We all love and miss you, but we want you to
Go Rest High up on YOUR mountain
Son, your work on earth is done.
No more pain, David, only joy.
