I will never forget the kindness shown to me as a new nurse by Mary who was my manager when I started at Inova in 2005. I had just moved away from home and was a new nurse just starting my career. Mary was patient, caring and took me under her wing to give me a supportive place to grow. She truly cared about her employees and our Med-Surg unit. I wish I could thank her again for all that she did for me. I will always remember her fondly!

I met Mary when our children were involved in the Christ the Redeemer youth group. Four of us “moms” became friends who met about once a month at Roy Rogers, Friendly’s or McDonald’s and over soft drinks or ice cream discussed our kids, world problems and many other topics. Not sure we ever solved anything, but we certainly enjoyed the conversations! We often “closed the place down.” We were called the “board” or “bored.” Never sure which it was. Over time we graduated to dinner every now and then—always to celebrate a birthday. Mary joined my line dance class at the senior center for awhile, which was fun, and I always knew I could see her in the ceramics room. Covid pretty much took her from us almost four years ago. She is the second of our four to pass on to her eternal home. She will be deeply missed. Deepest sympathy to Tom, Mike, Karen, Jonathan and other family members.

It was a privilege to have been Mary’s friend for over 50 years. She was one of the most unselfish people I have ever known. Long after her retirement she continued to serve, organizing social activities and transportation and spent hour after hour in the ceramics lab helping all to create something they could be proud of.

I met Mary for the first time when l wandered around the senior center, knowing no one, as a new implant from California. I looked into the ceramics room and was invited to come in and there learned about the many classes available. Mary has become an important part of my life as a positive influence, always compassionate, always supportive. She will be missed as she cannot be replaced.

If you're lucky, you meet a Mary Lutke once in your life! Mary had endless compassion and took great joy in saying just the right thing to make your day a bit brighter. I got to know Mary in the ceramics class at the Cascades senior center, along with Pat Miller, the 2nd half of the dynamic duo that came to become my lessons in life and yes, even artwork! She would deny any artistic talent on her part, but she was wrong. That room will never be the same without her, and I miss her so much. Rest in peace in the arms of the angels, Mary. Much love, Shari Dexter

The first time i met Mary I knew she was going to be my "best Friend." later, when i told mary that story every new person she met become her
"new best friend." and we were all happy to be mary's best friend.
we all (you know who "we" are) used to stop at the ceramics room at the senior center. Mary and pat were always there and we would brought up to date with what was going on and more. The staff at the Center used to tell us how much they liked hearing all the laughter coming from that room. Now the room is dark and empty.
we all knew that Mary loved her Tom and her children. She was crazy about her grandchildren and so enjoyed the times she had with them as they were growing up.

Mary hand picked a few nurses to work on the new medical surgical unit she was opening at Inova Loudoun. I was one of those fortunate nurses to work with the most amazing and wonderful boss ever. My sincere condolences to the entire Lutke family. Mary’s energy, warmth and joy is a forever memory for all who worked with and under her leadership. Sincerely, Phyllis Thaggard, RN

Tom, I was so sad to see that Mary had passed away. I think of the senior center often and miss you and Mary as well as the others that came to the center. I so enjoyed popping into the ceramics room and chatting with Mary and the other ladies. Their creations were beautiful and I am very thankful that I have a few to remember the ladies by. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Mary welcomed me into her home with kindness and warmth. She had a natural way of making me feel at ease and entertained me for hours with stories of her youth in Pennsylvania. Her indomitable spirit when faced with so many challenges should be a lesson in resilience. Her family absolutely adored her, and after only knowing her for a short time, it was easy to see why. She was so funny and adorable. Mary might be gone, but left us with a powerful reminder of how to celebrate life, face our hardships and hold onto the ones we love with enough strength that they’ll still hear our voice, the music of our laughter and the comfort of our touch long after we’re gone. Rest in peace, Mary Lutke, and know that you made a difference to so many.
