On August 22, 2023, Nanci Jewell of Reston passed away peacefully after a long and painful illness. She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Michael E. Jewell, and her sister, Virginia Harlow. Born in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, she and her brother, Lawrence who predeceased her, and her sister, were raised by a strong independent deaf mother alone. The family migrated to Washington, DC in the mid '50's. She also left a daughter, Julie and granddaughter, Sydney.
Nanci had a long career in government service and nonprofit work as well. As local DC Director of a Homeless Veterans program she secured a building that provided shelter for 78 homeless vets and their return to independence living and employment over three years. She also assisted her husband in his work in local affordable housing. Her tireless volunteer help on behalf of other local entities is well remembered by many.
Nanci's loving care of family and friends will always be remembered. As an amateur genealogist, she did enormous work tracing the family history often way back for several centuries. She studied at community college, and excelled at black and white photography. She was also an ardent lover of art and books.
