Obituary of Mary O'Neill Credle

Mary Therese O’Neill Credle, 62 years old, of Smithfield, VA, passed away quietly in her sleep on Tuesday, September 26th from breast cancer. Mary was born on April 24, 1961 to Raymond Anthony O’Neill and Anne Dvorak O’Neill in Arlington, VA.

She graduated from Marshall High School in 1979, continued her studies at Virginia Tech and received a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. Mary began her professional career as a Teacher at Smithfield High School for several years, leaving lasting impressions on her students. She spent the rest of her work career at the USPS and retired in 2023. In 1982, Mary married Michael Credle in Blacksburg, VA. Mary and Michael went on to have two children, Michael Terry Credle and Virginia Anne Credle.

Mary was predeceased by father Raymond Anthony O’Neill, mother Anne Dvorak O’Neill, brother Thomas Moore O’Neill, father-in-law Joseph Olin Credle, mother-in-law Hazel Richter Credle. She is survived by son Michael Terry Credle, daughter-in-law Maria McMickle Credle, grandchildren Haven and Sebastian Credle, daughter Virginia Anne Credle, daughter-in-law Valerie Kurka, ex-husband Michael Credle, brother Kevin William O’Neill, brother Paul Raymond O’Neill, sister Kathleen O’Neill Norton, brother Christopher Giles O’Neill, brother David Michael O’Neill.

Mary loved horses, bunnies, flowers, Sci-fi, antiquing, movies, sports, reading and music. Mary could change a diaper and the oil in the car, cook, clean, work back to back 12 hour shifts, advise and console her children and celebrate momentous events with friends and family. All of this could have been a typical Monday in a week of the life of Mary. She was truly amazing, understated and greatly admired.

Her unending devotion and love carried her throughout each and every day so that she could complete her mission of care for all those who were near, dear and in her charge. Mary completed her mission with a 4.0+ GPA and honors.
