Frank Channing Smith, 75, of Great Falls, Virginia, passed away at Loudoun Hospital Sunday, October 17 th , 2010. He was born March 31 st , 1935 to the late Mary Peck Jeter and Mason Francis Smith in McLean, VA. He was raised on a dairy farm (Masonary Dairy) on West Ox Road in Herndon, VA (currently Frying Pan Park), and moved to Great Falls when he was married in 1954. Chan was the beloved husband, of almost 56 years of Joan P. Smith, and loving father of Mason Smith (Tonya) of Winchester, VA, Richard Smith (Josila) of Great Falls, VA, and Laura Slaton (James) of Round Hill, VA. He was a proud grandfather of Chan Smith (Brittany), Angela Smith (Kofi Asante), Kristin Smith, Aaron Smith, Tyler Slaton, Andrew Slaton and the late Patrick Smith. He is also survived by his sister Ann Brooke Neukom (George) of Zephyrhills, FL, brother Benjamin Smith (Lynne) of Central S.C., and Leslie Ehrich (Brice) of Brooksville, FL. As a devoted father and grandfather, Chan dedicated his life to his family and community. He was a rural mail carrier for the Great Falls Post Office for 30 years. He began his service as a volunteer firefighter in 1951 at Herndon Volunteer Fire Department, and he moved to Great Falls Volunteer Fire Department, where he is a lifetime member, in 1954. He served in all capacities, including Fire Chief for 15 years. After retirement, he ran a successful lawn care business for 18 years. He was a member of Great Falls United Methodist Church. Chan will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He always brought a smile and a laugh to all occasions, and his memory will live on in our hearts forever.
Visitation will be held at Adams-Green Funeral Home at 721 Elden Street Herndon, VA 20170 on Wednesday, October 20 , 2010 from 5 - 8 PM. Funeral services will be held at Great Falls United Methodist Church, 10100 Georgetown Pike Great Falls, VA, 22066 on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 11 AM. Interment will follow at Arnon Cemetery, Great Falls, VA. Those who wish may make Memorial contributions in his name to Great Falls United Methodist Church.
