JOSEPH BARBOUR WILKINSON Vice Admiral, USN (Ret.) On Sunday, October 16, 2011 of Great Falls, Virginia. Beloved husband of Jane Pohl Wilkinson; loving father of Mary and her husband, David and the late John Pohl Wilkinson. He is also survived by his sister, Murray Stone; and his grandchildren, Michael and Christopher Heyer. After graduating from the Naval Academy in 1952, Joe entered into flight training. He earned a Masters Degree in Aeronautics at MIT. Joe served in Vietnam on two combat deployments. Flying 245 combat missions, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Bronze Star. He was most proud when, as Commanding Officer, he brought his squadron home from Vietnam without a combat loss. Following selection to flag rank in 1978, Admiral Wilkinson served in Naval Air Systems Command. He served four years as Commander, Naval Air Systems Command until his retirement in September 1989. A funeral service with will be held on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 10:45 a.m. at the Ft. Myer Old Post Chapel followed by internment with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery and a reception at the Fort Myer Officers' Club.
