(rkm) I generally worked during the summer vacation from school. In 1976, I was fortunate to get to learn basic automotive maintenance from my Uncle Yas. After the first month, I thought I'd show off to dad, and while he was on a business trip, I changed the brakes on his car. When he got home, I was soooo proud, took him outside, and; showed him what I'd done, and he was very complementary. At the time, driving was still pretty new for me, so; we often went places, dad and I, so I could practice. He said, lets go get some gas so I have a full tank for this week. So, we got in the car, and drove off. We hadn't gone but a few blocks, when dad asked, "Do you smell something funny Rog?" I answered, "Ah, yes, I do". But, weren't sure what was causing the smell. We got gas, and came home. When we got out, the rear tires were SMOKING!!! We called my uncle, and when he came over, we jacked up the car, and looked at the drums. He laughed, and asked me, "Did you remember to adjust these brakes?" I had NOT remembered.... So, essentially, it was like we were driving down the road with one foot on the BRAKE and one on the GAS at the same time! I adjusted it, red faced, and embarrassed, while Dad and uncle Yas just sat there and snickered at me. I actually got pretty good at brake jobs over the years, and never forgot how dad just gave me a hug and1 laughed, kindly, with my uncle at my blunder.

(rkm) On one of our many fishing expeditions, dad took us to the Colorado River. There we learned that river fishing is not as hard as we believed, and also; that there are some very interesting fish in the water. This particular time, dad taught me that all you need to do is put a spinner on the line, and toss it into the river, and slowly reel it back in. Not only is it good casting practice, but; it keeps you busy.
We'd been fishing for about an hour, when John caught a good size trout, about 1-1/2 pounds, and it was apparently a beginning. Then, dad caught one, and; it was the strangest fish that, at the time, I had ever seen. It was a trout, but; it was gold, not grey with a rainbow side marking, but gold. And, it had pink eyes. My dad laughed, and said, "Look boys! It's an albino trout!"
At first, I thought he was kidding. But, within the hour, we had each caught 1-of these strange golden colored trout, and each also caught another regular one. It was one of those really spectacular fishing days. I've never caught another albino trout, but; it was something I'll never forget.

(rkm)That's right, a sempster. Dad could sew. And he did for many years. When we were very young, dad hand made a lot of our clothes - shirts, vests, even pants. I've known many women who are excellent seamstresses, but; dad was the only sempster. He used to sew on this really old black singer sewing machine, circa 195x, that had its own cabinet, a foot peddle, and a hand-start wheel.

(rkm) When I was 8, my dad taught me how to never drown in a swimming pool. We were at the Tooele community pool, and dad first showed me what to do. He said, as long as you are in a swimming pool, you cannot drown - even in the deep end - if you bounce your way to the side. He jumped into the deep end, sank to the bottom, bounced up, took a breath, and repeated this action all the way to the shallow end. When he got out he said to me, "So, Roger, do you understand?" I said, "Yes Sir.". Dad then said, "Good - let's see". And he picked me up, and tossed me into the deep end of the pool. I didn't expect that. But, I did what dad had done, but to the closest ladder on the side. Soon after, mom and dad got me into swimming lessons, and I learned to swim proper. But, that lesson made me never afraid of water, ever again.

(rkm) We used to have a dog named Rusty. He was a Sheltie. He loved to go where ever we went, when ever he could. On one of our many fishing trips, with my cousin, John, dad, we were headed to Pineview dam in Ogden canyon. We all climbed into Ricky's jeep, and as we were pulling out, Rusty came along side, jumping up and down, and wanted to come along. Dad said, "It's okay, let's go." And we drove off. Rusty gave chase. And kept on running, right along side the jeep - all the way to 35-miles per hour! Dad told Ricky to stop, we pulled Rusty in, and we took him back home. Everyone was amazed how fast that little dog managed to run. Dad always loved dogs, and Rusty was no exception.

(rkm) When dad was programming lessons at Skill Center, he used to let me "play" on the computer at the Admin console. In those days, play meant playing Star-trek, the BASIC game. And, in those days, there were NO CRT, or DISPLAYs. Everything was done via TELETYPE. One weekend in particular, I got so involved playing Star Trek, that I lost track of time, and; the end of the day rolled around, dad called to me that it was time to go. I was not listening. He came into the computer room, and said, "Ah, Rog - how long have you been playing?" I answered that it had been a long time. Then dad saw the giant pile of used paper... And, he pointed it out and asked, "ALL for Startrek?" Only then did I realize how much paper I'd used. An entire box - which was a box of 15-inch wide tractor feed paper, that was 2-feet high when it is packed. The pile was substantial! Dad just laughed, and said, "But Roger - An entire box??? That box of paper was supposed to last a month!" I felt really bad, but all dad could do is laugh.

One of dad's favorite fishing spots, in Utah, was a place called Strawberry Reservoir. It's way up in the mountains, and a beautiful place. When I was 9, we went there with my cousin Richard, and started like most fishing trips, good food, relaxing in the sun. Everyone was catching fish that day, except me. For some reason, it didn't matter where I cast, I didn't even get a nibble. About lunch time, I was frustrated. Suddenly, I got a bite, and it was not just a little one. The fish on the other end, jerked my fishing pole right out of my hands! I never saw anyone move so fast. Dad ran toward the water, grabbed my pole, and gave it back to me. But, seriously, I was afraid, because this fish was BIG. I worked at it as hard as I could, but dad had to help me reel it in. It was a 5-pound trout. Biggest trout that I ever caught, and I wouldn't have, if dad hadn't saved my pole, and helped me reel that fish in!
