I was Eddie's first Customs supervisor in Brooklyn in the early nineties. I haven't been in contact for years as our careers diverged and I later retired. My wife Alice also worked with Eddie and counted him as a friend as well. When our mutual friend, Ken Hayes, passed along the news of Eddie's passing it really saddened us. Eddie was a fresh face when he joined Customs. Smart and enthusiastic, I could see he was destined for a great career. For all the time we were associated he was a pleasure to work with and was a real gentleman. Our prayers are with your family.

Mary Jo, Emma, and Abby - Our hearts are heavy in sorrow for you and all of Ed's family. We treasure our friendship and the many joyful times we have shared; when we connected only a few years ago, amidst the many laughs, the powerful love connecting your family unit was clearly evident. How that love translated into the indescribable courage you have displayed leaves an indelible mark on all whose lives you have touched. We stand with you now and always, humbled by your courageous and loving spirit.

Ed was truly an amazing person, a dedicated, committed agent, and a true friend to everyone. Even in the most stressed times, he had an easy smile, quick joke, or friendly rib for everyone. As Ed was truly an angel here on earth, it is only fitting that he is now one in Heaven. My deepest sympathy to Mary Jo, Emma and Abby, and his extended family and friends.

Our deepest sympathies, love and prayers your cousins from Staten Island. "God looked around His garden And found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb, So He closed your weary eyelids And whispered "Peace be thine". It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home". May God continue to watch over the entire Smith family.

I first met Ed on the phone in January 2009, as I was preparing to report to HQ; Tom Annello, my first Unit Chief in HRVWCU, has asked Ed to reach out to me to assist me in my transition there.
As Ed and I spoke, we came to discover that we were from the "old neighborhood" - "Broiklyn", NY (is there any other? :-) ...): amazingly, although we had never crossed paths having lived so close to each other (he in the Marine Park section of the borough, and I from Mill Basin), I came to find that we knew many of the same people and many of the same places that defined that area where we were born, raised and grew up - an almost instant bond was formed, although we used to jokingly "bash" each other about him being the "Mick" from Marine Park and me being the "Ginny" from Mill Basin :-) ...
I also came to find out that Ed was an Inspector in his previous life, as was I; he in Newark, and I in Miami, and that we both made that transition from tossing dirty clothes and humping cargo (as a rite of passage that all Inspectors must go through) to busting real crooks as field agents and then, alas, pushing paper at HQ - LOL !!! HQ life was quite the far cry from the realities of the field where we both cut our teeth.
When I arrived in DC in March 2009, Ed was the first person to take me out to eat while I was in temp quarters at the Residence Inn on U.S. 50 in Chantilly - The venue? No, not Morton's or The Capital Grille, but ... wait for it ... Five Guys, right down the hill from the hotel. Now, let me tell you, for a guy from Florida never exposed to the pleasures of a Five Guys burger and fries, I have to say I was lost in all of the greasy goodness of a double patty with cheese, bacon, grilled onions and mushrooms - heaven on earth !!! But, for as good as the food was, the company was that much better, and I knew Ed and I would get along just great.
I did 26 months at HQ, about equally split between HRVWCU and Domestic Operations. And, let me tell you, Ed kept this "ginny"'s feet to the fire when it came to reporting the happenings of the National Gang Unit - I can't tell you how many Director's Notes and Dailies he used to harass me (lovingly, of course) to write, forward or otherwise give exposure to his boys and girls at the NGU. But, it was hard to say "No" to Eddie - he was that kind of a guy, and, even when the substance of the daily activity was a tad weak, I found a way to "spruce it up" a bit with some razzle-dazzle writing and a call up to the JIOC to push it through (thanks Larry Hall and Mark Tempert :-) ...).
I always "threatened" to take him to Five Guys on a number of occasions, but, life somehow got in the way - we both had families, and time at HQ was very limited outside of the job, because we spent so many hours there, trying to do the good work that the citizens of this nation demanded in defense of its security. And, I tell you: Edward J. Smith, Jr. was a man amongst men - he gave all, BOTH to his family AND his country, and there are few finer I have met in my life than Ed.
Ed was supposed to come see me off at the Mandarin upon my departure from HQ at the end of May 2011, but I had heard rumors to the effect that he wasn't feeling quite himself ... God almighty, who would have known or guessed, yes? I wanted to reach out more, but I also wanted him to concentrate on the fight - although I couldn't volunteer to make meals, I would send gift cards, through Erica Petrillo and Rick Navalta in Ops to Mark Selby for Ed and the family to get Five Guys, as to get calories with greasy splendor into his body, in the hopes it would sustain him for the long journey ahead. And, as much as I prayed and supplicated to the Lord God that this cup might pass from him, his family and all of us, I had to surrender when the e-mail was broadcast yesterday afternoon and say "His will be done, not mine" :-( ...
And so tonight, amongst the alligators and the cottonmouth at the edge of the Everglades, where I returned, I find myself saying to Ed: "You're killing me ...", as I used to often say to him at HQ whenever he would poke his head into my cubicle and nudge me for that Director's Note or that Daily, and I am left asking God as to exactly what kind of shop He is running to take such a good man from us so soon. Even the Five Guys won't taste quite the same from this day forward, but, Ed, I am asking you to hold a table for us, in that little corner of Heaven, that, when I join you, we're going to eat and drink like no tomorrow, and cholesterol and fat be damned.
I wish you could see my tears, Ed, but they don't show up on a computer - trust me, they are real, and I will miss you always.
Cappy
