Our prayers and thoughts go out to the Decker family. If a person is measured by the impact they make on others lives, then, as a man who influenced so many in all walks of life, Chris was truly great. Our sincere hope is that you find strength from the sheer multitude of people who gained from counting Chris as a colleague and friend. He may be lost to us but the ripples he cast will keep going. God bless.

I am heartbroken to hear of Chris' passing. He and I worked on several global security issues together, and he proved himself to be a hero on one singular occasion. He stood for truth and in doing what needed to be done, despite whether that meant generating controversy. He will forever have my greatest respect for his selfless actions on behalf of our nation. Our family's prayers are with his family during this time. Please tell the children their Daddy was a hero to the nation, and we were all extremely proud to work with him. James M. I only knew Chris as a collegue focused on Global Health issues for the past two years. I immediately marveled at the depth, perspective and insight he brought to global health impacts of importance. He opened my eyes as a health professional to different, new and critical ways of thinking about global health influences. My heart and prayers go out to his family as they cope with the void of Chris's absence. His impact and his memory will endure. Sincerely, Lucienne Nelson

My mother and sister fled Louisiana just ahead of hurricane Katrina. They stayed briefly with some family in Texas, but they wanted a place far away from the destruction where they could just rest and wait for the power to come back and the flood waters to recede. My husband, Trevor, flew to Texas to help my mom and sister on the long drive to Virginia. When they arrived here, they parked my sister's storm and road-trip-filthy car in an open space and headed inside for some much-needed rest. The next morning, we awoke to find Chris washing my sister's car. No one asked him to do this, he just did it. He said he figured it was just a small way he could help out and it was "no big deal", etc. I think this sums Chris up pretty well. He did something kind for someone he didn't even know. He didn't expect anything in return, or even expect recognition. He did it just because he thought it might make my mom and sister feel a little better. It did.

Just a few weeks ago Chris and I sat together at a meeting and made plans for future collaboration. To suddenly not have him as a colleague and friend is shocking and heart breaking. He was a champion for public health and a thought leader in articulating the rationale for America's global health agenda. I offer his whole family my deepest sympathy and my gratitude for sharing him with us.

I only knew Chris as a work acquaitance. From the few meetings that we attended together, I sensed that he was a smart, kindhearted guy with a quick wit. Leaving one of those meetings, I noticed his vanity tag on his car but didnt understand it. I zoomed to catch him to ask about it. It was not ordinary but unique just like him! May God bless his family during this difficult time and beyond.

Chris was a good friend and colleague and will be missed by all of us who were privileged to work with him. The poet Kahlil Gibran stated: “…that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence…” How true. We miss him, his kind friendship and smile, and the humor that he mixed with reason and logic each day. We feel your loss and send you and your family our condolences and prayers. May God comfort you and give you peace.
