My deepest sympathy and condolences for this great loss. In my relatively short period of time that I knew George, he had a very positive impact on me as a truly loving and decent man. I, along with many of us who knew him through our Wednesday night auction, have already missed his presence, his kind face, and his thoughtfulness towards every single person in our group. My God bless his soul. Sammy.

I can tell you where George was on July 11, 1953 because it was recorded in my baby book. He was visiting his cousin, Wallace, and Wallace's wife Marjorie, in Arlington Hospital to see their new baby, Debbie (that's me!)

Dear Arlene and Family, Mary Anne, Mary Isabelle and I send our deepest sympathy to you for the passing of George. We will miss him greatly. I will miss our friendship that grew over the years at the auctions and Big Flea....somehow, he always managed to outbid me with a big smile on his face! How many good times we shared together those Wednesday evenings! George was a wonderful person and we are blessed to have known him. I fondly recall all our times at the Big Flea when you were both so kind to Mary Isabelle running through your stand with Mary Anne behind her...good times we will never forget. He shall be deeply missed but never forgotten! Your friend, Bill Tattersall

Hi Neighbor! That was the greeting I would always hear from George who has been my next door neighbor these past 23 years. He always had a smile and a friendly greeting and loved to talk to people no matter how busy he was. The last couple of years he wasn't as busy as he would like to be, and whenever he felt good enough he would be sitting on his front porch looking for some conversation to pass the time.
George was the epitome of a great neighbor. He was always around to lend a helping hand whenever he could. Whenever we needed some handyman advice he always seemed to have the right answers. If we ever needed anything from a paperclip to silverware or a sofa, George always had it in supply! It was somewhere in the depths of his garage or basement treasures, but he knew exactly where it was every time!
I have fond memories of the early years of Braywood Drive watching George and Arlene out my window toiling tirelessly in their yard transplanting and retransplanting trees and shrubs that he got a great deal on. His yard was an ever changing landscape project.
What George loved the most was getting a great deal. He also loved telling us about it. He took pride in his skill and he was good at it. I would marvel at some of the bargains he managed to get. He used his charm and intellect to the hilt! In fact, under George's watchful tutelage I learned to make some good deals myself. Thanks George!
We will all miss George. The combination of his good nature, intellect and charm was enough to make him unforgettable. One of a kind.
Good bye Neighbor and rest in peace,
Pat Hartman

My name is Elaine, the middle child of George's oldest sister, Frances. There are so many fond memories of visiting Uncle George and his family in VA through the years. He always acted like my mother, Frances, and her five children were "elite" visitors and showed us around town as we lived out in the country in rural SC, so the DC area looked GRAND to us...and it was! My mother was the oldest child in his family and I believe George was the youngest. He loved to have fun, tease us, and make everyone around him feel at home and comfortable in his presence....a real gift of hospitality, sensitivity, and wit. As life would take them in different directions over the years, George to settle down with his beautiful bride Arlene and their 3 wonderful children...and my mother to settle down in SC with my dad and 5 kids....it grew more and more difficult to get our clans together. However, I will never forget the extremely gracious and generous time Uncle George met my mother and me and my newly adopted daughter Jessica at Dulles. It was about 20 years ago and I was taking my mother back to CA with me for a visit there. We had a brief layover in Dulles, but that did not deter George from coming all the way to the airport to meet us at our next gate (that is when you COULD do such a thing!), and he was so looking forward to seeing my mother and meeting little Jessica. As if his own natural humor and charm were not enough, he reached in his pocket for a surprise for my little Jessica who had never met him before, and brought out a chirping yellow baby chicken, plastic of course, but "real" to Jessica as George so discreetly put his finger over the hard to see hole and made the chicken chirp to Jessica's amazement!! She thought he and the chicken were magical....and they were...and that little chirping chicken "saved" us on our flight to CA as whenever we needed Jessica to sit in her seat, we pulled out the chirping chicken and thanked God for my Uncle George who always knew how to make the youngest or oldest around him feel like the most important person in the room. Uncle George, we all love you and will miss you but please know you impacted our lives in ways you will never know, but all positive, and we know you are entertaining the hosts of angels right now and those loved ones who have gone before you! May your family feel God's loving arms surrounding them today and in the coming days and weeks as they miss a giant of a man! In Christ's love, Elaine Roper Marchbanks
