Dear Colleen and Tara,
My deepest sympathy to you and your families with the passing of the unsinkable Molly Brown, your mom.
My heart is aching as I think of al the good times we had together. I'm so grateful for that. It's truly difficult to imagine /reconcile the fact that she is gone physically but forever in our hearts and minds.
We all know that Edna McHugh was one of a kind and one to cherish. Selfishly, I think I I may have as many good memories of her as anyone outside the family, although others may make that claim.
I try to remember them often and one hardly knows where to begin: pottery "classes" a joy, shopping in Occoquan and having serious deliberations about what to buy -- the green velvet dress for Erin for example -- which proved to be worth every penny, then having lunch at the Country Kitchen, -- broccoli soup and sharing a sandwich, the pottery factory at the mall, Woodbridge Shoppers Food, Memco, going along just for fun, weddings, grandbabies -- I could go on and on.
I'll never forget your mom and shall hold her dear to my heart forever. Thanks for sharing.
Love you , Edna, God Bless.
With love,
B

Today, one of the most amazing women I have ever had the privilege of knowing will be laid to rest. Edna McHugh, my surrogate Nana, thank you for teaching us all to love wholly and unconditionally. Your strong and radiant spirit lives on in all the many lives that you touched, I know for certain you are with me today and forevermore. I feel so blessed to have had you in my life. Thank you for giving me the best friend in the world a girl could ask for, Caitlin McHugh. Thank you for raising a beautiful family that calls me their own. I know you are more full of life now than you ever were here on Earth and I know that Heaven is an even happier place with you there. I love you Nana. —

I know you and Tara will miss her, but my heart goes out to your Dad, for they were a great team.
We just put a dear family friend (good friend of my father's) to rest yesterday and realize the time has come for many of this wonderful generation.
Please send my love to your family. i know these last few weeks must have been difficult fo ryou all. Your are in our prayers.

My dearest Erin,
There are no worlds to take away your pain! I love you so much and am so thankful you gave me the opportunity to meet Nana. I have so many incredibly special memories of us -- high school graduation, going with nana and prissy to Chesapeake Bay ( the sisters arguing about the shrimp), trips to Olive Garden, Mimi's Cafe, Red Lobster ( we definitely enjoyed eating together!), going to the club, shopping together, going to Alexandria on the parkway together, meeting nana at Mt. Vernon for lunch after a workday at Parklawn. Nana had SO much love to give! She was incredibly generous! We will share memories of nana with our grandbabies. You have such wonderful qualities form nana -- I feel like you bring her to life daily. She is so proud of you and will be watching you your entire life. I'm so sorry! I'm here for you always!
Love, A

I wanted to let you know how sorry I was to hear of that your mom had passed away. I know it has been a long time since I have seen your mom and dad but I have so many wonderful memories from the times we were all together. The most important think I will always remember about your mom and will will forever be grateful for is what a good friend she was to my mom. She was always there for her especially in the though times. My mom was blessed to have her in her live.
We will be praying for all of you. Give our love and condolences to your dad.

Dear Len,
I was so sorry to learn of Edna's death. She was very friendly. I will miss seeing my backyard neighbor's smiling face. I admired Edna's obvious devotion to her family. I know that they are also devoted to you both and that their love will help you through this difficult tie.
If you let us know when you return home, I would be glad to bring a meal to you occasionally.
Sincerely, R & S

Dear Colleen, Mark, Erin, Meghan, and Caitlin
As I was unable to join you at Marco Polo after your mom's service, I wanted to send you a note. Your mom was a special lady and her service was testimony and a beautiful tribute to a life so well lived. It was so moving to listen to the letter your read and to see all her granddaughters standing side by side and sharing their thoughts. Your mom had to be looking down, smiling, and so proud.

Kerri called me about Nana passing away. She was one great lady -- loved by all -- life of the party on the dance floor always! Always on the go, shopping for treats, thinking of others ALWAYS! Dornock Court days (1986-05) all the kids loved her great smile. Hold on to all her great memories.

I have been struggling with how to write this note to you and express our feelings. But I just wanted to share with all of you that the news of Mrs. McHugh's passing away hit us all at the office very hard. Her kind heart and smile will be sorely missed. Hi Colleen and Mark,
We just heard about Nana's passing and wanted to send our very sincere condolences to both of you, Len, the girls, and everyone else. We are so sorry for your loss. We remember Nana very well and always enjoyed visiting with her when we came out to visit (especially those Rita's runs and dinners when Jeff was staying with you back in 2007!). We know how difficult things must be right now and wish we were still there to offer some help if needed, but please know that you are all in our prayers and heaven must be shining even brighter now, now that Nana is there. May God bless you all especially in the days and weeks to come.

From a friend of a friend:
I am sorry to hear that. Yes, we did have many good meals and fun times in her kitchen. She and Mr McHugh were very nice to us and welcoming, especially to me, someone they didn't know from Adam. That's because they loved you so much and I was your friend so I guess they figured I couldn't be too bad....Give my condolences to the family. I have fond memories of them both, but she was always so gracious and fun and funny. As I remember, she had arthritis in her hands and carried things between her wrists because she had no strength in her hands. You're right. She will not be forgotten.
Thanks for letting me know.

Hi Colleen - J called to tell me of the passing of your mom - I am so sorry to hear it. I remember her at all the recitals with Kelly and Erin - can't believe that was so long ago. We are all at that point with our parents now, but it is a loss none of us can really prepare for. Its such a primary relationship and one of the few that has lasted our entire lifetime. I wish I had adequate words to comfort you, but I am glad you have our shared faith that your mom continues on without pain in a beautiful place. I hope the memories of how much you shared as a family bring you comfort as well. Please let us know the arrangements. Love, G

Len, Colleen, Tara, Mark, Ed & families. We were so very sorry to hear that Edna has passed on. She was an outstanding lass and always so very welcoming whenever our paths crossed. I've so many happy thoughts of her going around my head just now mostly remembering the great banter that I personally enjoyed with her. I loved the way she would skelp my ear in mock anger when I teased her about something or shamelessly flirted with her. Great fun to be around will be what I remember most. I'm also very sorry not to be able to do this face to face with you all. Our thoughts are with you at this time. Graeme, Gillian, Siobhan & Calum in Scotland

Colleen,Tara, of course Lenny and the rest of your family, i love the picture you posted! It reminds me so much of Edna! Always smiling! i can hear her wonderful laugh as if i was with her yesterday. She was a remarkable lady, and has always been a role model for me. From her generousity, to her loving heart, her recipes and her vitality! The world is a better place because Edna was in it!
