Charles Edward Harshbarger, Jr. 72, of Great Falls, Fairfax County, Virginia, formerly of Arcola, IL, died on Sunday, January 20, 2013 at 3:20 PM EST. Formerly of Arcola, IL Dr. Harshbarger had lived in LaFayette, IN, Columbia, Mo, Overland Park, KS, Denver, CO, and Great Falls, VA. He was born on October 12, 1940, at Jarman Memorial Hospital in Tuscola, Illinois, to Charles Edward Harshbarger, Sr., and Alma Grace Swick Harshbarger. His childhood years were spent in Arcola, Illinois, where he was a member of the First Christian Church. He graduated from Arcola High School in 1958 and excelled in both scholastic and athletic abilities. He was Co-Captain of the Arcola football team that won the 1957 Okaw Valley championship. He was also Captain of the famous 1958 championship Arcola basketball team, when he was known as "Easy Ed," and led the team to the "Sweet 16" level for the first time in the school's history. He graduated with an agricultural economics degree from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana in 1962, where he was a member of the Illini basketball team and a member and officer of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He completed a Master's Degree at the University of Illinois and earned a Ph.D. degree in Agricultural Economics from Purdue University. He was an Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri for four years. He was an officer in the Federal Reserve Bank before 1983, when he joined the Farm Credit Administration in Washington, D. C. as an agricultural economist in the Economic Analysis Division and was named division director in September, 1985. While at FCA, Dr. Harshbarger was recognized and honored twice by his colleagues, receiving the FCA Peer Awards for fairness and integrity. On June 30, 1962 at the Arcola Presbyterian Church USA, he married Lianne Marian Allen, daughter of Dr. Elmer Sherman Allen and Jane Chloe Jarman Allen. Lianne, her two daughters, and one son survive. They are: Shannon Jane (John) Mullen, Shawnee, KS; Lance Edward (Sonya) Harshbarger, Olath, KS, and Allison Lianne Harshbarger (David) Adams, Mineral Wells, Texas. In May of 1987, Dr. Harshbarger married Mehrangiz "Mary" Khanizadeh Harshbarger, a chemistry teacher in the public schools of Fairfax County, VA. He was a loving and caring father to her children, Kayvan Khanizadeh and Yasmin Khanizadeh (Matt) Hatley, Sterling, VA. Mary and her two children survive. Dr. Harshbarger is survived by his mother, Alma Grace Swick Harshbarger, 99-years-old, and two brothers: William Roger Harshbarger, his wife Nora Lynne Bacheldor Harshbarger, Arcola, IL; Robert Swick Harshbarger, his wife (Harriett Vicki Olson) Harshbarger, Lithia Springs, GA. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Children of Shannon and John Mullen: Shelby, Shane and Paige, Shawnee, Kansas; Children of Lance and Sonya Harshbarger: Olivia, Caroline and Julia, Olathe, Kansas; Children of Allison and David Adams: Chloe, Jett, and Miles, Mineral Wells, Texas Children of Yasmin Khanizadeh Hatley and Matt Hatley, Liam and Ruby; Also, many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Dr. Harshbarger, often accompanied by his children, revealed an adventurous spirit in his love of golf, whitewater rafting, skiing, and his interest in Civil War history. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Edward Harshbarger, Sr., on September 28, 1991. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at ADAMS-GREEN Funeral Home located at 721 Elden Street Hendon, VA. 20170 at 4 PM with Chaplain Steve Becker officiating as well as at the Arcola Presbyterian Church USA at 311 E. Jefferson St, Arcola, IL. On February 2, 2013. The visitation will be from 10 AM to noon. The funeral service will start at 1 PM with Rev. Don Winch presiding. Inurnment will take place at a later date. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the 1. American Cancer Society, 2. Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore ,Maryland. 3. Lombardi Cancer Center , Georgetown University in Washington D.C. and 4. Langley Residential Support Services in Vienna Va. (2070 Chain Bridge Rd. Suite G55).
