Stephen Ray Jones was my dad. And I am his son. Over the course of my life, I have carried with me many happy memories of my dad that have served to make me the happy person that I am.
The oldest memory I have of Dad was when we lived in San Diego, and I was about three at the time. I can recall several details about living there; I remember the floor plan of the house we lived in and that it was on a main road in Point Loma… I can recall the garage behind the house with a nice backyard to play in. But I mostly remember sitting on the living room rug, right next to Dad in his chair, watching Walter Cronkite on the news.
Later memories are of living here in Virginia, first in Hampton in a big brick house. One not so pleasant memory at about the age of five was when I decided I had just had enough. I was moving out, running away. I cried to my parents that I was leaving. But instead of pleading for me to stay, Dad helped me pack. He made sure I brought underwear, socks and my teddy bear in a little suitcase, placed in a red wagon that I would pull behind me to head to where someone loved me. Well, I got about a block away and realized that maybe someone did love me. I found out later that my dad had followed close behind me but so as not to be seen, and when I turned crying to head home, he ran ahead and when I came around the corner, he was sitting on the curb. I ran to hug him, he hugged me. Now, if any part of this parental lesson makes it sound like my dad wasn't a complete softy, then that would be a definite misunderstanding. In the same house, I must've done something that was a big, big no-no and I was in major need of a spanking. My dad told me to lie across his lap. With me crying and scared to death of what would be my first spanking, Dad raised his hand to slap my backside, and as his hand came down, he slapped the couch instead and then broke out into tears. He turned me around, picked me up and said that he'd never spank me again. He never did. And as I recall, I don't remember being in enough trouble ever again to warrant one.
Moving to base housing in Norfolk brings many treasured recollections to me…. In the summertime, my dad would take me for hikes to the adjacent tidal basin made of sand dunes and salt water ponds in between them. I never wanted to go without him, as I knew only he could protect me from the huge crabs we'd see in the ponds. I have vivid memories of Dad calming me during my first hurricane… and my most amazing Christmas ever was when I had come down to see what Santa Claus had left for me… there was a big green pedal toy tractor and I'm sure many other presents but the best thing ever was that "Santa" had fabricated an enormous battle scene with plastic army men, tanks, trucks, barracks and barbed wire that completely enshrined the dining room table. I would have to guess that the jolly old man in red stayed up until two or three a.m. to create such a masterpiece. "Santa" was the best.
Most notable of the amazing adventures my dad and I shared included two cross-country family road trips which included visits to Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone Park, Grand Tetons, Carlsbad Caverns, and Yosemite. Dad loved to take us on trips, and I'm sure he loved every minute of it. I sure did. In fact, vacations with my wife and kids are extremely important to me now.
In the more recent years, Dad and I were separated by thousands of miles and focused on our busy lives on opposite ends of the country… but I frequently thought about him and always missed him.
As we the living pass through this life, the wisest of us treasure each and every day the best we can. Still though, we bring our fondest memories with us, which help us through each of these days. Dad, now that you've moved on to a better place and no longer are here in front of us, I hope you know that the memories you made for me helped to make me who I am. Farewell, Dad. I love you.

The following poem was forwarded to the family from a shipmate of Steve Jones. Thank you Carolyn Honeycutt for passing it along to us so we could make it part of his service this morning at Quantico National Cemetery. -
The Unknown Shore/When the Tide is Low -
Sometime at Eve when the tide is low
I shall slip my moorings and sail away
With no response to a friendly hail
In the silent hush of the twilight pale
When the night stoops down to embrace the day
And the voices call in the water's flow -
Sometime at Eve When the water is low
I shall slip my moorings and sail away.
Through purple shadows
That darkly trail o'er the ebbing tide
And the Unknown Sea,
And a ripple of waters' to tell the tale
Of a lonely voyager sailing away
To mystic isles
Where at anchor lay
The craft of those who had sailed before
O'er the Unknown Sea
To the Unknown Shore -
A few who watched me sail away
Will miss my craft from the busy bay
Some friendly barques were anchored near
Some loving souls my heart held dear
In silent sorrow will drop a tear
But I shall have peacefully furled my sail
In mooring sheltered from the storm and gale
And greeted friends who had sailed before
O'er the Unknown Sea
To the Unknown Shore -
- Elizabeth Clark Hardy

Steve was the leader of the sonar department during the construction of USS Ray and during its deployments in the late 60's. He was highly recommended by the command for an officer's commission, and received it, going on to other duties and advancement to LT, USN.
During those deployments, USS Ray gathered many honors including a Naval Unit Commendation and a Meritorious Unit Commendation. Steve was personally honored for his work.
I was part of that department and I'm proud of that association. He could lead and he could make us laugh.
Fair winds, and following seas, Steve.
