I was sad to hear the news of Coach's passing. He was always a pleasure to speak to, and I will always remember his kind words. I'm sure he already has the heaven game schedule and will be one of heaven's greatest fans. We will surely miss him.

My thoughts and prayers to you all on the passing of a wonderful man. I have such great memories of Mr. Davis and being fortunate to have been able to learn the game of baseball and share time with the Davis family. Mr. Davis was one of the kindest, patient and knowledgeable coaches I ever had. He always taught and instructed us the proper way to play the game and would correct us in a way that built confidence. I never heard him say anything negative in all the years I knew him, and wished there were more out there like him on the ball fields today. A true gentleman who will be missed but never forgotten for all he did and the example he set in how to treat others.

Our deepest sympathies go out to the entire Davis family. Although we only met Jim at social events--we were always aware of his constant involvement with his family--and the greater family of baseball. The fine man that Tom is--and TJ is becomming--are a reflection of the model shown by Jim and how he lived his life. Wishing Peace and Comfort to you know and in the days ahead.

James B. Davis passed away peacefully on November 12, 2013. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Seymour and Lillian (Tierney) Davis of Center Moriches, NY. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Linda Patterson Davis, his sons, William and Thomas (Lynn Miller) and one grandson, T.J. He is also survived by his three brothers, Seymour (MaryAnn), Richard (Rita) and Thomas (Dawn) as well as many other relatives and friends.
After Jim graduated from Community College he went into the Army and was sent to Japan. After his return he moved to the Washington, DC area and started to work for Johnson Controls where he worked for 38 years. He was respected by his coworkers and one, Dave Patterson, liked him enough to introduce Jim to his sister, Linda. Jim and Linda married in 1959 and lived in Arlington. They moved to Vienna in 1964 and have lived there since. Jim was known throughout Vienna as Coach Davis. He coached his sons in both basketball and baseball. His love of the game and his kind nature made him a favorite among players and parents alike. He retired his clipboard in the mid seventies only to be re-enlisted to coach baseball two decades later by him son Tom. Together they coached TJ and it was then that Jim became known throughout Sterling as "Coach Poppy." He coached every spring and fall season for some 10-plus years. He was also a fixture at the Dominion High School baseball field. Always the first fan at a game and never an unkind word.
We will honor and celebrate Poppy's life this Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Adam-Green Funeral Home, Adams - Green Funeral Home, 721 Elden Street, Herndon, VA 20170
Visitation will be from 2:00 - 3:30 pm with a small service at 3:30 pm. The family invites everyone back to the home of Tom and Lynn Davis immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you consider a donation to Dominion High School - Titan Baseball Program, 21326 Augusta Drive Sterling, VA 20164. Please be sure to notate that this donation is being make in memory of Jim Davis.
Poppy is now in heaven and as several people have said, " God just got a really good coach."

My sincere condolences to Aunt Linda and my cousins Bill and Tom. As a boy whose first love was baseball, it was clear to me that Uncle Jim shared that love and I always enjoyed the stories of Bill and Tom's exploits on the Vienna baseball fields. I also remember buckwheat cakes in the mountains of western Pennsylvania and trips to Deep Creek. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Our deepest condolences to Tom and his family. I only got to meet Coach Poppy once or twice but Tom spoke of him often. Tom and TJ are great men and I'm sure that is because of the great man that Coach Poppy was. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

My favorite thing about Uncle Jim was his smile and quick laugh! He was so positive and kind. He certainly did love his baseball and his eyes sort of twinkled when he talked about it. I am certain that he made a difference in the lives of many kids and their families in his role as coach. Our love goes out to Aunt Linda, Bill, Tom, Lynn and TJ.

I have many wonderful memories of my uncle Jim. He was a kind and gentle hearted soul. Quick to laugh, always smiling, never a harsh word did I hear from him. His family was his life. He was so very proud of his children and grandchild. I loved to hear him talk of their sports accomplishments. Peace and love to all of his family. He was a champion.
