Kani, we love you and will be here for you. Joe will truly be missed very much by our family. His thoughtfulness, kindness and determination never went unnoticed by us and he was such a great role model for our girls, Lauryn and Anna. They always showed excitement to see him because he always showed them attention. For that alone, we thank you, Joe. Men like you don't come along often enough anymore. May you rest in peace knowing that Kani will be looked after by all of the good people that you have influenced in your life:) Love always, Paul, Judy, Lauryn and Anna

It was December 1992. All was fair. I had just flown in from Fairbanks, AK to Fairfax, VA. With five other men, we were all going through orientation to soon begin our deployment to Riyadh to begin work on Vinnell Corporation’s modernization program with the Saudi Arabian National Guard. Being a civilian, “deployment” sounded odd, but such was the lingo among all the ex-military folks associated with this enterprise. Most relished their social exclusivity and enjoyed the comradely of poking fun at the new guy with long hair and obvious unfamiliarity with Army ways. But there was this one man who stood with, yet also apart from the group, who introduced himself as Joe Carreira. A friendly bloke, who took quick measure of the alien, sat down to talk. Rather than emphasize our evident differences and divergent backgrounds, Joe recognized and encouraged commonalities, such as love of adventure, challenging work, John Wayne movies, and heavy-duty firearms. We both immediately found value in the other and formed a lasting link. Our productive association continued to pay dividends as we both moved up through the company ranks – I to section chief and Joe to branch manager (with Joe often assuming acting division duties as well). Joe’s leadership skills glowed extra brightly in the aftermath of the residential compound terrorist bombing of May 2003, wherein he was selected to oversee security coordination and construction matters. Joe was the kind of guy you knew you could rely upon in a crisis and was therefore chosen when crucial action absolutely positively had to be executed. To my delight, Joe was eventually selected to be my immediate supervisor, so I knew my section was receiving the best branch support possible – not because Joe and I were friends, but because Joe always brought his consistent level of attention to every member of his work family. A consummate delegator, Joe rarely got down in the weeds unless requested. And request I did on occasion, as Joe was also my mentor. My questions became fewer as I inculcated Joe’s mantra of MISSION-MEN-ME in that required sequence. Joe’s virtue was not merely personal competence, but leadership that motivated his people (and if you were part of Joe’s team you were “his people” and harbored an inspired sense of belonging) to do their best work. Few individuals possess the aptitude to simultaneously be your buddy and your hard-nosed supervisor – someone from whom you take direction . . . and a beer. Joe was such a man and I am all the richer for witnessing and sharing his example for the past 18 years. It is for this reason the loss is compounded. Yet solace is taken from superior memories and guidance that will last well beyond Joe’s physical passing. In this sense, he lives still. -Keith Miller

All - I worked in the same building as Joe. We did not work toegher, but we sat on the same floor and we would speak to each other in passing. I did not know Joe very well, but I didn't have to know very much to discern what kind of man he was. He had a great spirit about him, always had a smile on his face, and was feeling good regardless of the situation. Joe was a dedicated man who worked very hard, and was well liked. Looking at the write-up, Joe obviously lived a good life that was full of days. May God bless him with eternal rest in Heaven, and may the Holy Spirit comfort all who loved him and mourn him this day. God bless.

Mrs. Carreira and family, I am truly sorry for your lost, Joe was truly a good mentor and friend. I met Joe in Saudi Arabi during my assignment with OPM-SANG as the G-3 Advisor and I really got a change to known him in April 2009 during our NTC trip. Joe was well known and well like by the all leadership in the National Guard and I am sure they would say that they to have lost a good friend. I will truly miss him. God Bless you!! LTC Shaw

We only heard of Joe's passing thru a coincidence. I work at a dental school and we received a letter from Vinnell Arabia signed by Joseph L Carreira. The hair on the back of my neck stood up as this was the company my husband worked for five years and the man who we shared a villa with for three of those years. We left Riyadh in 1997 and lost touch with a large number of good friends including Joe, Kani and JJ. We talked and thought of them many times over the years and wondered where they were and how they were doing. I called the number on this letter to find out that I missed speaking to a great man by two weeks. Shared this information with my husband and we are both extremely saddened by this news. Joe was a great guy, to us he loved his family, friends and the military. Kani - please contact me if you need anything as we now live in Georgia, so not too far from Virginia or anywhere you land. We miss you and love you. Kathee and Brian
