Hello, It is only be chance that I found out about John's passing. I worked for John at MAXIMUS for a brief time in 2006. Even in that short time, I learned a great deal from him. He was a kind boss with a great sense of humor. I loved that he drove a VW Beetle without a sense of irony. He taught me about the Babelfish web site. I know he loved his family very much. I am sure you miss him. You are in my thoughts. Sincerely, Colleen McKenna

I was stunned earlier this week when my brother forwarded this obituary to me. I was one of John's students at WT Woodson from 1989 to 1991 and, as others have said, I remember well how devoted he was to his profession and how giving he was with his time. I don't think back then I appreciated how fortunate we were to have a teacher like him. A comment David Bloch made at Mass today sticks with me: What mattered most to John was not whether you became the best Latin scholar or turned in a perfect translation; what mattered was that you left his class having grown as a person. I somewhat sheepishly admit that now, 20+ years later, I would struggle to read any Latin except at Mass, but I retain fond memories of the Woodson Latin Club and the positive influence John Donohue had. Ave atque vale, Magister.

I met John almost 30 years ago as a freshman at William and Mary. He was very kind to shy girl who came to W&M knowing no one. I was very sad to hear about his death. It is apparent that he lived a fulfilling and purpose filled life with a wonderful family. I will keep you in my prayers.

I was a student of Mr. Donohue's at Paul VI High School from 1985 to 1987. Mr. Donohue was one of the best teachers I ever had. I remember the first period of my first day during Sophomore year, and there was John Donohue, who had graduated from W&M just a few months before. He seemed like such a fresh, young teacher, and he was great at teaching. He got a bunch of us to participate in Certamen (Latin competitions) on weekends. We'd drive to competitions all over the state, and we loved it. John Donohue was a huge inspiration for many of us at Paul VI, and it was very sad to read of his early death. I stopped in and saw him at WT Woodson while I was in college, but then hadn't seen him since. But I'll always remember him, probably more than any other teacher at my High School, College or Grad School. RIP, Mr. Donohue.

I was shocked and so sorry to hear this morning of Mr. Donohue's passing. I was a student of his at Woodson until he left to teach at PVI, and I never (before or since) knew a teacher more giving of his time to his students. RIP.

I'll remember John as my very favorite guitar playing, Latin speaking, wickedly funny and very charming neighbor. Whenever he was playing his guitar on his front porch I would reroute my runs to catch a few more minutes of his free outdoor concerts. I'll also never forget him leading all the kids in singing Irish folk songs on St.Patrick's Day. John was a generous and kind man..the kind of guy to show up to help you on moving day or drive your kids home when they strayed a little too far down the road in the neighborhood. We were so lucky to have known John and will miss him always.

John was a tremendous inspiration to us all. He taught me how to teach. John captured our imaginations and showed us by example how to make Latin fun for our students. We all loved him for it. Ave atque vale, mi amice.

Amy and I had the pleasure of getting to know John at Arthur Andersen and Sears. We both thought of John as a thought leader and often sought out his advice and trusted his guidance. We were both influenced by his leadership and continue to reflect on the lessons we've learned. We will greatly miss John and wish his surviving family and friends strength during this difficult time. All of you and John will be in our prayers.

I had the pleasure of getting to know and work with John during his time at Arthur Andersen and Sears, and we've kept in touch since. John was not only a great colleague, but mentor. On top of that, he was one of my favorite people to be around. The consummate teacher, one of the most important lessons I'll take from John is the way in which he handled this last difficult chapter of his life. I will miss John tremendously, but will always happily remember the laughs we shared. My thoughts and prayers are with all of those closest to John.

I would like to send my condolences to the family. When someone we love dies it is very painful. But the Bible talks about God doing away with this pain at Revelation 21:4. May God provide solace to your family at this time.
