Patti was a room mate to Barb and Frankie for two years in 1970 and 71.. Patti and I married and she moved to Richmond with me. We all enjoyed being young, in love, on our own, the best music ever, being in D.C. And all the fun of the times
We feel out of touch over the years but thoughs of her brought me here. It is so sad to find that chapter closed. We will miss her.

I worked with Barbara at Herndon HS for many years. She was a wonderful teacher and friend. We shared a love of animals, especially cats. She took a cat from me that was found at my apartment bldg. and eventually that tabby cat ended up with her parents, I also met Monkey, the cat who terrorized her other cats. We shared a lot of stories, our mutual love of HHS, our love for teaching. I cannot believe that she has passed on at such a young age. She was so vibrant, funny, and involved in life's events. I am glad she had her dream home in Sperryville, a quaint town I loved to visit. I send my profound condolences to her family and wish to express my overwhelming sad ness that she is no longer with us. We have lost a woman who spent her life giving of herself to others. The world will be a sadder place without her.

Miss Fletcher (or "Fletch," as we called her) was an extremely influential, enormously popular and dearly beloved teacher. She was totally hip, but was also genuine and nurturing. She was also forward-thinking: her progressive ALP ("Alternative Learning Program") English class held "regular" classes only every other day. On the other two "non-plenary" days, you had study time. The ALP idea was to get you ready for a college schedule, but you really came away with a lot more than mere awareness of what your freshman year was going to feel like. You acquired skills.
Fletch was a fountain of enthusiasm, and being a part of her class was a coveted status symbol for a Herndon Senior in the early 80s. As a savvy, snobby ALPer, you knew you had made it, and there was an incredible sense of belonging in her class. Not unlike Harry Potter and Hogwarts, Fletch brought out some surprising powers within you, because she was so inspiring. When I think back on her class, it is the interactions and achievements of my fellow classmates that I remember most. And that was what made Fletch such a remarkable moderator. From start to finish, her class was all about you and what could be done to unlock your true potential.
After I graduated Herndon, all my school papers disappeared into whatever void school notebooks vanish into at the end of the year. All but one: my ALP log. There were still a few ideas not yet realized in it, so I hung onto it for a while. Now that's what I call influence.
Thank you, Barbara Ann Fletcher for your selfless giving, endless positive energy, and panache. Thank you, thank you for helping me discover the real me. Thank you for the laughs, for putting me on the spot, for forcing me to improvise, for pushing me out of my comfort zone. Thank you for your forward-thinking, envelope-pushing manner of facilitating. Thank you for making me realize how fortunate I was to be a part of your classroom while I was still in it.

To Barbara's family I am so sorry for your loss. Barbara was one of the most wonderful teachers that I had in High School. When one of my best friends passed away in 1975 she wrote me a beautiful 3 page handwritten letter (which I lost) but I will never forget it. She was something beyond special. I am so sorry I missed the chance to thank her properly later on and catch up (once I grew up).

My deepest condolences go to all of "Fletch's" family and loved ones. Not only was she a wonderful teacher, but an amazing woman as well. I was going through a difficult period when I had her for ALS English and she took the time and patience to help me put things in perspective. Her advice has made me a better person and I will always be grateful

So sorry to get this news! Barbara was friends with my older brothers, but the 4-H community was small. We all contributed and we all joined in the fun! Barbara was older, but she always had time for me. She would listen as if there was no one in the room and I just wanted to be around her! She was a born leader. She was taken too soon Mrs. Fletcher (mom) and Tommy (like brother Jimmy too) and I'm so sorry for your loss. May you feel the Lord's loving arms around you as you grieve the loss of one of the best. Much love, Carol

When we got to school our lives outside those walls could invariably drag our minds away from our studies. Barbara Fletcher knew this. She worked hard to transport us from the seemingly insurmountable river of problems in our home live's to a safe shore where we could learn something. It did not matter if that thing was necessary to our daily experiences or helping to contribute to our future success.
Thank you for your belief in your students and the work you did to keep so many of us in the boat. Your life was a beautiful gift to all.
Sincerely, Megan McGill

Barbara and I have been friends since I moved to Ashburn in the 5th grade. There were so many adventures throughout elementary and then, high school. Then, after college, we lost touch somehow. I always thought of Barbara on my birthday. She and good friend, Alma Davidson and I shared March birthdays in a row, the 8th, 9th, and 10th. Barbara was the one in the middle.
Thank goodness, the three of us were brought together for a weekend at an LCHS reunion quite a few years ago. We had so much fun, once again, and vowed to stay in touch on our birthdays. We did that this past March, each of us emailing the others with good wishes. Little did we know.
March will come again and I'm sure Alma (aka "Aggie") and I will send each other good wishes. And our thoughts will surround our dear, absent friend - the one in the middle. Much missed.

When I look back on my years at Herndon High, the brightest "moment" was undoubtedly class with Barbara Fletcher. Barbara was simply the best teacher I encountered during those years, and I am not the only one who feels that way!
Once, we were asked to write a detailed essay on the act of drying your back with a towel when getting out of the shower. The goal was to be so descriptive that someone who wasn't there could literally follow the story and repeat the actions exactly. It proved to be more challenging than you would imagine! And it helped me be a better, more precise writer over the years.
Thank you Barbara for igniting my curiosity and having such a tremendous and lasting impact on me. You will always be in our hearts!

Barbara will long be remembered by the dozens, if not hundreds of us who had the great pleasure of enjoying the fragrant scents she brought to help our amygdala clear deep memories and light up the pineal gland at the cave of Brahma.
We were blessed to enjoy her incredible generosity at sharing hundreds of these essential ols with us and we appreciate that she carried these heavy bottles with her up the mountain just so we could enjoy them at our gatherings on what I love to call, "White Rose Mountain."
No oils is more pure than the rose. It cannot be recreated in a lab. Barbara was like that, she was unique, pure and full of love.
We will miss her. Thank you for being part of our lives, Barbara.

I have very fond memories and tell stories of how Barbara Fletcher was an amazing teacher and better person who genuinely connected with everyone she met, especially her students. She made ALP English fun and she taught us to open our minds and believe in ourselves. Thanks so much for that Barbara and my best to family and friends.

Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of a wonderful teacher and mentor. Ms. Fletcher was my English teacher at Herndon High many years ago. She ignited my love of literature and also guided me through a very difficult time in my family life when my father passed away. I am now an attorney practicing in Washington, DC. I will always appreciate her high standards, intellectual curiosity and genuine love of teaching. She was a true mentor to generations of students. May her memory be a blessing to all her family and friends.

Mrs. Fletcher was my guidance counseler at HHS and she was a kind, loving and honest woman. Her smile would light up the office. I am so sorry to hear about Barb's passing. I send sympathy to her mother and brother and family.
As a teacher, I emulated Barb's work. Kids came to her with their secrets and she helped them. Her students loved her classes. She was a master. So much so that she had to become a counselor, too.
She was a positive person and she forgave so readily. She showed her love with vitality. I shall always remember her as one of the best women whom I've known.
