Thank you, Sensei, you taught me so many valuable life lessons that I wish I could have been more receptive to at the time. "Two steps forward and two steps back and nobody gets too far like that." Nothing could be truer. The K.I.S.S. method "Keep it Simple Stupid", was another great gem. I didn't always catch on at the time but in hindsight I truly see the richness of your wisdom. I wish I could have train under you longer, it was only two years, but it was an enriching experience. You were a true Sensei in every sense of the word, a master of the sacred art, you did it the right way and it was truly a blessing to have you as a teacher. I made the wrong choice when you gave me the final ultimatum, for that I regret. Rest easy my friend for did a great service to God, Family and Karate. -Matthew Norcott.

I just ordered a new gi. I had not had a formal uniform in over ten years. And as I put on my old belt and my new gi and practice in my apartment, my katas flow back to me, and my body knows what to do. I have been looking up what happened to my old karate instructors... and I'm grieved to see that my Sensai Sal Franco has passed away. I never forget anything. I had about the hardest black belt test I could ever conceive. :) I remember every moment, and every lesson. I remember everyone I trained with at the school I was so fortunate to live down the block to. Sensai gave me so much confidence, and was an is still a tremendous part of my life and of who I am today. Self defense never stopped being a way of life for me. So I will remember you sensai. I still train, and I still consider myself a karate-ka. Thank you for all you have done for me. I saw the glint and pride in your eye when you looked at me, even though you were not always easy on me. Thank you. It was not unnoticed and it has in no small part made me who I am today. Onegai shimasu Sensai. /bow
I come to you with only Karate,
My hands are empty but I fear no man,
Should I be forced to defend myself, my honor, or my principies
Should it be a matter of right or wrong, life or death,
then here are my weapons. My empty hands. -Karate maxim
I will use what I have learned to keep myself and those I love safe always :) Thank you again Sensai for everything. And I am going to keep remembering my kata.

Early in my teens I asked my mom to sign me up with karate and that's when I met sensi sal. He was my mentor from approximately 13 to 17 and then again for year at 19, until "life" and school got too hectic. I'm now mother of twin boys and I'm signed my sons up martial arts. I hope they work for the same feeling that sensei sell provided me with. I came to do an Internet search to see if he was still around so I can thank him for all the lessons he instilled in me however instead I found his obituary.
My sweets and sensi, I still look at the fire dance in the candlelight when I need to relax just like you taught me. In my heart I bow again to you and say sayonara sensi.

HOPE THIS GIVES YOU A LAUGH. WHEN I WAS A DETECTIVE WITH SAL IN THE THIRD IN BAY SHORE OUR SARGEANT ANTHONY PUZZO CAME OUT AND SAID HEY HOW ABOUT SOME WHITE CASTLE. I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THEY WERE BUT SAID I WOULD GO AND SAL SAID HE WOULD GO WITH ME. LITTLE DID I KNOW THE NEAREST ONE WAS ON THE CORNER OF PENISULA BLVD AND SUNRISE HWY IN LYNBROOK. WE WENT AND I PARKED BEHIND THE STORE AND SAL LEFT THE DOOR OPEN ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. AS HE WENT INTO THE STORE I TURNED MY LIGHTS OUT AND DROPPED DOWN IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT TO REST AND A LYNBROOK PATROL CAR CAME BY DID A DOUBLE TAKE AT THE CAR AND WENT ACROSS THE STREET, TURNED OFF HIS LIGHTS, DUCKED DOWN AND I SAW HIM PICK UP HIS RADIO MIKE. HE THOUGHT A ROBBERY WAS GOING ON. SAL CAME OUT WITH ABOUT 80 BURGERS, 15 SODA'S, 80 ONION RINGS IN TWO BOXES GOT INTO THE CAR. I STARTED THE CAR UP PULLED OUT INTO THE STREET, TURNED MY RED GRILL LIGHTS ON, BLEW THE SIREN AND WAVED TO THE COP, WELL HE WAVED AT US TELLING US WE WERE NUMBER 1 OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT AND WE TOOK OFF LIGHTS AND SIRENS. AS WE WERE CRUISEING ALONG THE PARKWAY A PARK COP PULLED ALONG SIDE, SAL WAVED HIM AHEAD AND HE GAVE US AN ESCORT TO THE NASSAU LINE. AS I PULLED OFF THE PARKWAY ONTO FIFTH AVE THE SIREN BURNED OUT AND WE WERE ABLE TO MAKE IT FROM LYNBROOK TO THE SQUAD IN 14 MINUTES, THE STUFF WAS STILL HOT. THE NEXT MORNING LT CUNNINGHAM WANTED TO KNOW WHERE ALL THE WHITE CASTLE CAME FROM BUT NOBODY SAID ANYTHING. HOPE THIS MADE YOU CHUCKLE A LITTLE. BOB HULSE

I have such warm memories of Sal from when we were all younger. Along with my mother, Frances, my father, Charles Franco, (Uncle Sam's brother), we'd make regular Sunday visits to either Uncle Sam and Aunt Angies home or to Grandma and Grandpa Franco's home. Johnny and Sal, and my brother and sister, Tom and Joan hung around together. As the youngest, I was the tag-along, but Sal was always kind to me. I was especially happy when he came to my college graduation party. Sal was a kind and gentle soul. My family and I send our prayers and condolences to Lynn and family. With love, Bobbi Franco Adams

I was in the same squad as Sal and had the adjoining desk. He was maticulous at both work and appearence. Sal would always try to improve my habits and appearence. Working in a SOP program allowed me alot of freedom. I also remember how much he liked the little blue MG. Rest In Peace My Friend, Your Memories will always be cherished. Lou
