Susan A. Mitchell
Susan was born Susan Anne LaFramboise on January 19, 1932 in Detroit, MI. She died peacefully in the company of her husband and three of her seven children. As described by those present, she was resting and quietly slipped away to partake in her great reward.
Beloved wife of John F. Mitchell for 55 years; devoted mother of children John J. (wife Judith and children Nathan and Tori) of McLean, VA, Thomas (daughter Kaitlyn, wife Laurel and step daughters Brittney Imburgia and Jessica Lahr) of Ann Arbor, MI, David (wife Madeline and children Juliana and Alexander) of Alexandria, VA, Charles (wife Karen and children Kevin, Emily, Hannah, and Nora) of Kirkwood, MO, Mary Culbreth (husband Stephen and children Claire, Susan and William) of Alexandria, VA, William B. (wife Amy and children Henry, Sarah, and William E.) of Fairfax, VA and Susan Caldwell (husband Chris and children Catherine, Carolyn, Collin and Connor) of Warwick, RI.; cherished sister to Thomas O. Laframboise of Livonia, MI. Susan was preceded in death by her parents Louis Paul and Mary Edna LaFramboise and her three beloved aunts Jean Holmes, Ann Livingston and Mary Chastain.
A graduate of Mercy College of Detroit with a BA in Elementary Education and of the University of Detroit with an MA in English. Susan taught elementary school for five years prior to her marriage and returned to teaching when her children grew older.
She was a tremendously strong woman who loved her family and faith very deeply. In their early married life as a military family with the Air Force, Susan and John moved frequently to locales such as Salina, KS, Dayton, OH, Edwards AFB, CA, and Selfridge AFB, MI. She cared for her five young children while her husband was engaged in the Vietnam War from 1966-1967. Susan and John later settled in Williamsville, NY, to raise their seven children from 1967-1995. They spent the last nineteen years in Reston,VA, surrounded by many of their children and grandchildren. Susan was well read and news savvy and particularly enjoyed the DC political atmosphere and the opportunities to enjoy the Arts. Susan remembered the details of the lives of family and friends that made each person feel cherished.
Friends and family wishing to pay their respects are invited to the viewing at Adams-Green Funeral Home at 721 Elden Street in Herdon, VA on Monday, December 15 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. On Tuesday, December 16 at St John Neumann Church at 11900 Lawyers Road, Reston, there will be a second viewing from 10:00 am to 11:00 am followed by funeral services at 11:00 am. Internment to be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
