Dear Joyce and Family, I was shocked and saddened to hear of Jim's sudden passing, and our prayers for comfort are with all of you. Jim's service on our school board and on behalf of Loudoun's children was exemplary. His reporting of school board meetings after his terms had ended was always the most accurate news available. He loved his family and his community, and we were all enriched by knowing him, Joyce, and his family. The Garden at Sully Elementary will always serve as a tribute to his dedication to all of Loudoun's young people. I was honored to serve as superintendent of schools under his leadership on the Board. I am sorry not to be able to be with you as we are snowed in. May God's comfort be with all of you. Sincerely, Ed Hatrick

Joyce, Krista, and Scott, I was so saddened to get the news of Jim’s passing from Bobbie Johnson. Please know Nancy’s and my thoughts and prayers go out to all of you. Jim was one of the most decent, unassuming, and civil people I’ve ever known. I never knew Jim to say an unkind word about anyone. Jim’s outstanding record as a public servant, particularly his many years serving on the Loudoun School Board, speaks for itself. He looked out for the interests of his “home” schools but he also was passionate and committed to doing what was best for all of the students and staff of the entire school system. I know that as a rookie principal at Park View I valued his perspective, candor, and most of all tremendous support of our school and everyone associated with it. I was fortunate to have Jim as both a parent and School Board member, and more important, as a true friend. Beyond school, Jim and I also were kindred spirits with our love of oldies “Beach Music”. Occasionally on a Saturday morning I would venture in to see Jim’s Oldies Show at WAGE Radio. To make my day, he always would play a particular song that we both loved by the “Showmen”. One Saturday I took both of my young children to the station and Jim allowed them to go on-air as DJs for a precious, memorable few moments. The excitement in their eyes said it all. That’s the kind of guy he was, reaching out and trying to bring happiness to others. Finally, I know how much all three of you meant to Jim. He worshipped his family. His passing truly means we have lost an outstanding individual, a great husband, father and friend. However, we can all take solace in the reality that we all are better for having had Jim be a part of our lives. He definitely will be missed but certainly not forgotten. All of you will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

Our prayers and thoughts are with Joyce and the family during these trying times. I have many fond memories of Jim from our Jaycee days. Jim was a man of sound character and his belief in the Jaycee creed was demonstrated daily, especially when it came to Camp Virginia Jaycee and all the summer campers who were able to attend as a result of Jim's unselfish commitment to the camp. Hopefully Joyce and the family will also keep those memories close at heart. Eternal Memory.

To all of the Purks family, I know that I have not been in contact with you guys for a long time but I do value the friendship I shared with Krista throughout high school. I am so very sorry for the loss of your husband and father. These transitions are never easy (nor should they be), especially when things happen so unexpectedly. Please do your best to honor the story, all that Jim taught you, and all the ways his beliefs and mannerisms are woven into who you are today. Live each day to make him proud through your actions. In doing so, he will never really be gone from your thoughts and your hearts. In you, he has left a powerful and amazing legacy. I have no doubt that each of you brought him infinite joy and pride. Keep his spirit and memory alive and try to find comfort knowing that many people have been touched by Jim and your family and that we are all sending you the most positive thoughts we can!!! Sincerely, Krisi P.S. Krista, should we touch base again, I'd make sure to have Friends Season 2, Episode 15 on hand along with some juice boxes to share!!!

I was blessed to know Mr. Purks, and work with him for 21 years as he served on the Loudoun County Board of Zoning Appeals. He always arrived early to our meetings, ready to greet everyone and ask how they were doing..... and one of the last to leave, wishing everyone a nice evening and weekend. He was a true gentleman - kindhearted and caring, always thinking of others. He will be missed by myself and many others. Sending love and prayers to Mrs. Purks and his family.
