Obituary of Robert James Michanco

Robert James Michanco, devoted son, brother, husband, father, uncle, great uncle, and friend, died unexpectedly, Monday June 29, 2015, of cardiac arrest. Robert was born January 5, 1963, in Chicago Illinois, but spent most of the remainder of his life, creating long lasting friendships and memories in Sterling Virginia. Rob graduated from Park View High School, and went on to attend Mary Washington University, where he briefly studied cartography, before beginning a career in the automotive industry. Most important to Rob, was his family. He maintained a very close relationship with his mother, brothers and sisters, throughout the years. This relationship only grew stronger with the birth of his children, Paige and Ryan from his marriage to Kathy Pierson Michanco, and Shawn and Scott from his second marriage to Lisa Finch Michanco. He loved his children very much and was proud of all of their accomplishments. Rob thoroughly enjoyed his job and was a very hard worker. He spent the last 30 years working in the automotive field in Northern Virginia, primarily as a state inspector. He was always willing to help his friends and family with any issues they may have had with their car(or anything in general), and never asked for anything in return. Rob had a love for history, which he shared with his son Shawn, a new found love of craft beer, which his daughter Paige introduced him to, and even more, a love for sports, including the Washington Nationals, Capitals, and Redskins, and the Jacksonville Jaguars, a team his son Ryan supported after moving to Florida. When he wasn't discussing history or current events, getting sports updates, or trying out a new local brewery, he could be found at one of his son Scott's many ice hockey games. Rob also loved the game of golf. On any given day, Rob could be found playing a round of golf at Sterling Golf and Swim Club, where he was member of the men's league. Whether at the ice rink, on the golf course, or working at his station, he developed many lifelong friendships. Whether you knew Rob for a minute, or many years, he treated you as though he had known you forever. Rob is survived by his four children, Paige, Ryan, Shawn and Scott Michanco, mother Vernette Michanco, sisters Barbara Phelps, and Mary Michanco and brother Leo Michanco. He is also survivided by his nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephew. He is preceded in death, by his father Walter Michanco, his sister Kathy Kish, and brother Walter "Butch" Michanco.
