I am so sorry for the loss of such a family treasure like your loved one. They must have told wonderful stories and entertained many family and friends over the years. Please hold on to those. Take comfort from Psalms 34:18-"God is near to those that are broken at heart, and those who are crushed in spirit he saves". My sincere condolences to the family and friends.

One of the pillars of old Mclean will be missed. If you lived in McLean, you knew Jack. The fire station was the information center for all of us who grew up there. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I first knew Jack when I was working as a college cadet assigned to FS-18 where he was the Captain. I can remember riding behind him on Wagon 18 going to structure fires and him wearing the old 15 minute sling air pack. Later on he was my Battalion Chief. Today, incident commanders have tools to help run a fire like tactical worksheets, passports, unit ID tags, etc. Back when Jack was a BC, all those things were in his head and he never missed a thing. Great example for us kids back in the 70's.

Jack was my first battalion chief after I was hired by the fire department and was assigned to Station 1. He was practical, down to earth, and understood people. He had very positive influence on me and my career. He was one of a great group of guys who were instrumental in making our department great. I am very sorry that he is gone, and will keep his family in my thoughts and prayers.

My memories of Uncle Jack are plenty - the smell of his cigars, his jolly laugh, his devotion to his parents, wife, children, grand-children and great-grand children. He loved everyone and everyone loved him. He was a great man in so many ways and I am proud to be his favorite niece (a little joke between him and me - no offense to the other nieces). His love of hot, spicy food, like those red-hot sausages, that turned his whole head red! He called me 'meanness' but as a term of endearment. Someone called me 'meanness' yesterday in jest, brought a tear to my eye. And his cars - can't not mention the cars - especially the 'Batman' car. I know they are celebrating in heaven as he is reunited with his wife, his parents and his brother, my Dad. I miss all of them and someday we will all be together again. Until then, I'll honor his memory as best I can. I love you Uncle Jack.

My Dad what can i say but that he was such a Great Father and Listener. As long as i can remember he always wanted to make sure everyone was okay and that his kids always had Gas money or just Money. He was the most caring man i know . When my Mom would say no to something I would always go to my dad and of course he would say Yes, but don't let your Mother know. He had a way with people that as soon as you met him you loved him. Dad I will always cherish the time and memories that i had with you and you will always be in my Heart. Thank-You for being my Dad and always loving me and making sure i was happy. I'm sure on these summer nights you will be sitting down with us eating Crabs and drinking a Cold Beer, and listening to us tell stories about you and you'll probably hear stories that you never knew about. Dad you are in Gods hand now so rest now no more worries , we have Gas money and Money ! I will Always Love you , Your Daughter Deb.

My heart felt sorrow to all the Akre family. Uncle Jack was a dear man with so many friends. I will always remember his big laughter, the cigar and always had a story to tell. Quite an icon to the fire department.

Jack was a dear friend for many years. We thought the world of him and loved him dearly. He will be missed. We are so glad we got to see him when we were in VA for Thanksgiving last year. He has gone on to a better place to be with his beloved Doris. We are sorry we won't be able to attend the services but our thoughts and prayers will be with his family during this difficult time. Jack thanks for the memories!!

My grandpa was simply the best! The sweetest, kindest, most gentle man you'd ever meet. He was a friend to so many. He could sit and talk about 'the old days' with you for hours. I was so blessed to have him in my life, and for my children to have known him, even if only for only a short time. I will miss him every day! I know Jesus, Grandma, and Great Grandma and Grandpa Akre are happy to have him home with them! Oh the stories they are telling.. :-)
