My employer was doing an article on me in the company newsletter concerning my long time hobby of Pole Vaulting even at age 55. They wanted pictures of me vaulting and they needed it in the next 24 hours. I didn't have any so I began looking for a vaulting facility where I could take some action pictures. No dice, I was coming up empty handed. The next morning I thought about Big John...or course... he knows everybody in that game. I finally got him on the horn and explained that I needed pictures that very day and did he have any suggestions. He said, "Hey Mike you forget I'm coaching again at Catholic U. Tell you what, I can leave home and meet you at the Catholic Field House at in about an hour!" Whoa, my man Big John! I left my office at Postal Headquarters and found my way to Catholic U. and then the Field House. I pulled up and there, standing with a huge grin on his face, was Big John. A great hand shake and a hug and we headed in, set up the vaulting standards and in no time I was going over the crossbar with John taking the pictures with my cameras. What a guy, gave up his day to help a pal and the pics were featured on the front page of the Postal Service Headquarters employee newsletter.. Yes, it was typical of my friend...Big John...always willing to help a friend. We love you john.

I cherish my memories of playing volleyball in Forestville Elementary School's gym after school with "Coach John". He would be there - wearing a hat - ready for a good serve and lots of laughs. His pateince, advice, and sense of humor were greatly appreciated. I'm honored to have called him a friend and a great coach!
