Obituary of Helen Elizabeth Casey

Longtime Loudoun County resident and community activist Helen Elizabeth Kermath Casey, 83, died January 23 at Capital Caring Hospice in Arlington, VA.
She was born December 3, 1932, in Detroit, MI, daughter of the late Eric and Emily Kermath. She attended the University of Michigan and the Catherine Gibbs School of Boston. In addition to raising four children, she held a number of administrative positions, most recently working as an aide to former State Sen. Charles Waddell.
She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, William F. Casey, Jr. of Sterling; daughter Anne Griffin of Leesburg; sons Eric Casey of Arlington, Carl Casey of Fairfax, and Mark Casey of Manassas; granddaughters Catherine Casey, Sarah Casey, and Nicole Griffin; grandsons Tyler Griffin, Kyle Casey and Ryan Casey; sister Margaret Storey of Asheville, NC and brother Addison Kermath of Pacific Palisades, CA.
Helen was a community activist and volunteer in Loudoun for most of her 40 years as a resident. Her many activities included: Chair of the Eastern Loudoun League of Women Voters, founding member of the Bypass Alternative Review Committee, Board Secretary of Sterling Citizens for Action Now, Eastern Loudoun representative on a citizens advisory panel for the Northern Virginia Subregional Transportation Plan, and founding board member of the Loudoun County Transportation Association (now known as the Virginia Regional Transportation Association). In addition, she was appointed by Gov. George Allen in 1988 to serve on the Goose Creek Scenic River Advisory Board (GSCAB), serving as chairman of the board from 1999 to 2009. In 2009 she was formally recognized by the Loudoun Board of Supervisors for her efforts with GSCAB. She also attended virtually every County Board of Supervisors meeting from 1986 until 2010. She ended her role as community activist in 2010 to serve as full-time caregiver to her husband.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 30 at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon, followed by interment at Sterling Cemetery. Flowers may be sent in care of the funeral home. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Alzheimers Association or to the Sterling Foundation.
