Mr.Hughes was like a tv series and a movie when it came to his life and in the end we all want to have as many epic stories as he had. He himself was one epic tale. And it was always entertaining and informative. Glad to have met him. He will be remembered..

Please accept my heartfelt condolences, words cannot begin to express the sadness you are feeling right now. I met John 6 years ago when I began volunteering at Brambleton. Big John, as I called him, was a great person to be around. He was always smiling, provided great conversation with a quick wit and a kind word. I played many a round with him but what I will remember the most is arriving at Brambleton to golf on a Sunday morning, walk around the corner to see his smiling face and sounds of Jazz playing as he started everyone out on their round. He will truly be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Rest in peace my friend.

To Janice and family, my heartfelt condolences on the passing of John. John and I were partners representing DEA on the FBI Child Abduction Task Force, from 1996 till I retired at the end of 1999. During this time, John and I worked many cases together and became good friends. We stayed in contact and would meet yearly at the NRA gun range, located in Fairfax, for Law Enforcement qualification. Last time we met at the range, a month ago, we agreed to start going to lunch and spending more time together as soon as I returned from my visit to Chicago. I’m so sad and sorry John is now gone. I will miss him.

Dear Janice & family:
Our prayers and thoughts are with you at this time.
I wanted to share a short story about John and our dog - Hans.
Our career paths crossed many times throughout our time with BNDD & DEA. The most memorbale was when he was assigned as the Country Attache for the office in Brazil at the same time I held that same position in Peru. We were frequenty on the phone discussing operational matters since these two countries figured prominently with international drug traffiking routes at that time. I had previously served in Brazil many years prior to Peru and John & I enjoyed talking about our favorite Brazilian cuisines and restaurants.
During one of these late night phone conversations while he was at his house, I heard a deep throated dog bark and asked him 'what the heck that was?' Turned out that was 'Thor' their Rotweiller, faily pet and head of home security! That simple question led to many more conversations about Rotweillers, what a marvelous breed they were, how intelligent they were, the best family dogs, etc. Fast forward about a year later and John and I are now tryingt to figure out how I am going to get a promised puppy from a recent litter of pups from John and Ernie Braithworth' Rotties (another fine Special Agent also assigned to Brasilia who also had a Rottie) from Brasilia to Lima. We figured it out and although the details will remain classified until the statue of limitations runs out, will just say that thanks to John, our puppy of about 6 weeks (Hans) flew from Brasilia through Sao Paulo to Lima... in First Class.
Hans was the best dog our famiy ever had and he stayed with us for more than 10 yrs, which is a good life span for that breed. Whenever people would ask where did Hans come from, I would relish telling the story about my friend & colleague John, and how he convinced me that this was the dog to get, how ihe orchestrated getting Hans to Peru and the time we enjoyed having Hans as part of our family. John was clearly the impetus for us being introduced to Roitweillers. We would often check in with each other to see how Thor & Hans were doing.
John was one of those Special Agents who left a very positive mark with BNDD & DEA, evidenced by his stgrong work ethic, a sucessulf career and the positive influences he left with his friends & cooleagues. He will be missed. May he rest in peace.
