Rob Ryder posted a condolence

Dear Pauline, Christopher, Kirsten, Pat, Patty, and Stephanie,
I am so sorry for your loss and cannot express in words how saddened I was to hear of Rob's recent passing. Rob was one of the best people I will ever know. I will always remember his thoughtfulness, bravery, compassion, and concern for others that he expressed on a daily basis.
While Rob and I did not keep in contact as much in later life, I frequently think back on many fun times Rob and I had on camping trips, trips to Washington D.C., bicycling, kayaking, cooking, and at Rob and Pauline's wedding. Rob helped me see the potential I had even when I didn't see it myself and I'll be forever grateful for having such a great friend.
Love,
Rob Ryder

Rob took me and group of colleagues on a wonderful and memorable tour of Antietam several years ago. He was so knowledgeable and fun, and made our shared American history and our profession so current and alive. I will always remember this, and know that his knowledge and enthusiasm touched so many people. Thank you Rob. Our thoughts are with your family.

Fair winds and Following Seas to my friend and bud Rob J. Lynch.
We knew each other during a difficult time, at least for me. We were new cadets in the same company in the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. I remember his dorm room as one of the most welcoming and friendly places on the entire Virginia Tech campus. We would gather around his computer and listen to his endless enthusiasm for all things Star Trek: TNG, his manuscript for a Star Trek novel, and to audio clips of a radio show featuring someone called the "Greaseman" (that was an education :-)). Somehow, he even managed to have many of us participate in a Star Trek murder mystery. That was a whole lot of fun! He was the epitome of a bud. I remember him being indomitable, gentle, fearless, enthusiastic and kind. The sort of person, in short, that makes the world a better place for everyone around him. I'm grateful that I got to know him when I did and sad that we won't be able to reconnect in this lifetime. See you on the other side, Rob!

Rob:
Thanks for the enjoyment you gave me. Though all of our fun came at work, most of it came when we weren't actually working. You showed me things that I can't explain to people without adding, "you had to be there." You always said 'yes' when it came time for lunch...and lunch was rarely in our building because the food places in the Reston Town Center kept calling our name. RTC always brings me great memories and I will always think you when I'm there. As always, I drink a toast to those that have left us far, far too soon. This one I have now is a special brew & I'll remember as the one I had for you.
Miss you, Rob!!!
