BARBARA CAMP BROWN May 20, 1920 to August 26, 2016 Barbara Camp Brown, 96, passed away on August 26, 2016 surrounded by family following a long illness. She was born May 20, 1920 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Hiram and Dora Camp. Barbara grew up in Tulsa and graduated from Tulsa Central High School. She attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri for a year before transferring and graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 1942. While a student at the University, she met her future husband, George B. Brown Jr. Upon graduation with a degree in Physical Education, she joined the Red Cross and deployed to England, entering France across Omaha Beach in the late summer of 1944. She and George were reunited in Europe at the end of the war and were married in Antwerp, Belgium on June 18, 1945 prior to her returning to the states. As an Army spouse, Barbara traveled to many locations around the country and overseas while raising four children. Upon the death of her husband George, she became the Senior Cadet Hostess at the United States Military Academy at West Point providing social development for the Cadets. After 10 years of service at the Academy, Barbara retired and moved to California for a short time before finally settling in the Washington DC area. Barbara was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and served as a docent at the DAR Museum in Constitution Hall. She also served as an Army Arlington Lady, a volunteer organization at Arlington National Cemetery that ensures no soldier will ever be buried alone. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Jim, and husband George. She is survived by her children, George III (Carolyn) of Oceanside, CA, David (Ellen) of State College, PA, Michael (Ruth) of Reston, VA, and Barbara Fee Snipes of Harker Heights, TX; six grandchildren Kelly Ginsberg (David) of Sparta, NJ, Justin Brown (Holly) of Boalsburg, PA, Tennille Brown of Oceanside, CA, Elizabeth Brown of Eldersburg, MD, Michael Snipes (Tamara) of Bradenton, FL, and Katie Snipes of Austin, TX; seven great grandchildren Sarah, Jack, and Michael Ginsberg, Nate and John Brown, Ryan Evans, and Reagan Snipes; her sister Margaret Ahrendt of Roseville, CA and brother Hiram Camp (Connee) of Tulsa, OK. Barbara was devoted to her family by being a great role model and providing a guiding light to both young and old that will not fade with her passing. She was a devoted wife, mother, mentor, Cadet Hostess, true friend, volunteer, accomplished cook, party planner, Arlington Lady, and so much more. She was an excellent representative of the Greatest Generation. Her family knows she is already in George’s arms dancing the swing and planning the next party. Memorial donations may be made to the Army Arlington Ladies, Administration Building, Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia 22211. Checks should be written to Army Arlington Ladies, and include “Barbara Brown” in the memo area. The Memorial service and burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
