I found this memoir when I was cleaning out Dad's easy chair. We thnk he wrote this about 3 or 4 months ago.
I guess I have always been lucky.
I was born into a loving family with a mother (Mabel Harris) and Father (Harvey Harris). We always had food on the table and a place to live. We moved many times during the depression and I went through eight different grammar schools and four high schools. We were immersed in a family of relatives and kin folks. Everyone shared in keeping the family together, especially with the world at war. Most of my eight cousins went off to war for love of country. It was the thing to do at that time. When I came of age I went into the Navy. I had read two or three books on electronics and on induction I went to electronics school. I was lucky enough to pass through and was stationed on an aircraft carrier (USS Antietam).
By the time I got into the Navy the war was mostly over. I signed up for four years in the regular Navy starting in 1945. They turned me into a blue water sailor, a golden shellback and a flying dragon as well as a repairer of radar. After visiting Australia, Japan, China, and the Philippines plus several other Pacific islands we came to home port to decommission the ship.
When my tour was over I got a civilian job repairing radios and TVs in a shop on Market Street in San Francisco. It was there that I saw the possibility of making more money if I were to go to college. I went back east to Brooklyn Polytech to become an engineer. Since Uncle Sam was willing to pay tuition for more formal education I took the easy way out and signed up for college. Some three and a half years later I graduated from Brooklyn Polytech as an engineer. I quickly started my engineering career on Long Island with Sperry Gyroscope Company.
While I was at Sperry I did note that the jobs for engineers were being eroded and saw a downturn in engineering. More specifically, I could see a reduction in the numbers of engineers that were necessary to turn to a given design idea into hardware. I left Sperry after, several layoffs, twelve years, and a 30% reduction in staff.
I shipped off to a St Louis Company (Emerson Electric). They were building up their workforce after a 90% layoff. It was four years before the next layoff, but that was enough time for me to get an introduction to a beautiful, special girl by the name of Beverly. After a sojourn of four years Emerson had another one of their now famous 90% layoffs.
By this time I had married that girl (again lucky) and had two babies (Paul and Mathew). From that time through the 1980’s it was necessary for me to jump from one defense contract to the next contract, at least until I found out that Sperry was hiring. During this time I started two companies that quickly ran out of money. Once I found out that Sperry was hiring I packed up my wife and twin boys and moved to the suburban Washington DC area. There I stayed until retirement, some twelve years later.
The town we moved to was named Herndon and we have stayed in the same house for more than 35 years. How lucky can you be? I worked at Sperry for twelve years, and later worked for the community TV station for another 10 years as staff engineer before my back gave out. Now I have a good seat in front of the TV and avidly watch police dramas.
Now you see why I say I was so lucky, not smart, just lucky. That about wraps it up here until I’m called upstairs. One wife and two kids- No one has ever seriously shot at me- Sperry did right by me and I started two companies. I tried a lot of trivial things, but loved one woman for a very long time.

My sincerest condolences to the Harris family. Harvey always spoke so proudly of all of you.
I worked with Harvey for several years at HCTV. Two things I could always count on from him was a willingness to help out and joke of some sort. He taught me about the importance of paying attention to small details, and that you should always make a little time in your life for your passions, whether it be art, writing, sports, or anything that motivated you to smile and get up in the morning. These two lessons have served me well in life!
