Obituary of Joseph A. Sabri

OBITUARY Joseph Aziz Sabri, 95, of Herndon, Virginia, passed peacefully from this life on September 6, 2016. He was born on February 28, 1921, in Aleppo, Syria, to Katrina and Aziz Sabri. After earning his medical degree at the American University of Beirut in 1946, Dr. Sabri immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1949, and completed a residency at the University of Toronto and postgraduate work at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He settled in Arlington, Virginia, where he spent the remainder of his medical career as a partner and intermittently as Chairman of the Yater Clinic from 1954 to 1999. He retired from private practice in 2006 on his 85th birthday. He was an Associate Clinical Professor at George Washington University; Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology at the Washington Hospital Center from 1970 to 1971; and Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology at Arlington Hospital from 1977 to 1997. He published numerous articles on surgical techniques in otolaryngology publications, and was consistently named as a Top-100 Physician in Washington, DC by Washingtonian Magazine. He is survived by sons Philip (Amy), Jeffrey (Lyndee), Andrew (Michelle), Christopher, and Michael and daughters Katherine (Daniel) Banks and Elizabeth; grandchildren Maureen (Matt) Olson, Katie (John) Dawes, Brian Sabri, Daniel Banks, and Matthew Banks. He also mentored three nephews, Rony, Roy, and Alain Sabri, during their educational years in the United States, adopting Alain during the worst of the civil war in Lebanon. Dr. Sabri was predeceased by his sister, Marie and Zakieh Sabri; brother, Michael Sabri; and his first wife, Esther. Services will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Dranesville United Methodist Church, 1089 Liberty Meeting Court, Herndon, Virginia 20170, with visitation prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity.
