Dorothy Sullivan Dannacher
Dorothy Sullivan Dannacher, 84, a retired secretary for the Defense Department at the Pentagon, died peacefully after a long struggle with Alzheimer's at Falcons Landing in Potomac Falls, VA.
She was born in New Berlin, IL on October 17, 1924, the daughter of the late John T. and Mary Grace Leahy Sullivan. She was the second oldest of nine children and she is survived by four sisters and two brothers: Mrs. Eleanor Killian of Palatine, IL; Mrs. Marcie Graezel of Orange, CA; Mrs. Catherine Hewett of St. Louis, MO; Mrs. Dolores Killian of Barrington, IL; Mr. William Sullivan of New Berlin, IL; and Rev. Kevin B. Sullivan of Phoenix, AZ.
After graduation from high school in New Berlin, IL she moved to Springfield, IL and worked for International Harvester and later for the Illinois Department of Agriculture. In 1948 she moved to Washington, DC when she was recruited by the Civil Service. She worked at the BUPERS in the U. S. Navy for two years, then transferred and worked the remainder of her career in the Department of Defense at the Pentagon. Her father was an Irish tenor, and she shared his natural talents. She joined a volunteer group of artists in the 1950s who regularly sang at events and hospitals in and around the DC area. She also enrolled at George Washington University to pursue her undergraduate studies.
She met her husband, Carlos E. Dannacher, now a retired Air Force colonel, at the Pentagon. She accompanied him on his various assignments in the United States and Europe. In 1975, they moved their family to St. Louis, MO where she was an extremely active volunteer most notably with Catholic Charities of St. Louis. She also was an accomplished bridge player and played weekly. Thoughout her life, she adored travelling and especially enjoyed her European tour and made many trips with her husband and children.
She was admired for her beautiful voice, her gentle touch, her sense of humor and love of travel. She was loved by family and friends and will be dearly missed. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Stacy D. Sullivan and her husband, Jim, and their three sons, Robert, Jack and James, of Marblehead, MA; and her son, Gregor T. Dannacher and his wife, Anne, and their children, Charles and Caroline, of New York, NY.
