Obituary of Susan Nelson McCabe

Susan Patterson Nelson McCabe, age 78, passed away on November 16, 2016 at home surrounded by family. She was born July 21, 1938 in Davenport, Iowa to Wilbur and Margaret Nelson. She spent many happy times growing up in Morgantown, West Virginia and East Lansing, Michigan. Susan married John William McCabe III in 1960, after graduating from Michigan State University with a degree in Nursing. She taught at the University of Florida from 1968-1971 where she also earned her Masters in Pediatric Nursing. She earned her Ph. D. in Human Development in 1979 from the University of Maryland and then taught at Catholic University in the Nursing Program until 1985. After many years teaching and working in healthcare, Susan retired in 1997 as the Director of the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program at Georgetown University. She said her proudest moment was saving a baby and enjoyed knowing that others could be saved from skills learned in her program. Susan spent her retirement traveling with friends, reading, joining her P.E.O. sisters for events, attending events at the Smithsonian and National Gallery of Art, enjoying art and opera around the world, and spending time with her daughters and four grandchildren, playing games, baking, and joining them for events big and small as the grandchildren grew. Susan is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Allen and Lisa Santoro, their husbands, Jeff Allen and John Santoro, and her four grandchildren Braeden Allen (18), Teagan Allen (14), Riley Santoro (13), and Logan Santoro (10) as well as her beloved extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband of nearly forty years, John William McCabe III.
