Obituary of Joseph Squarzini Jr.

Joseph Squarzini Jr. of Great Falls, Virginia and Fort Lauderdale, Florida died unexpectedly on Thursday, April 13, 2017. He was born on July 29, 1939 in Flushing, New York to Joseph Squarzini and Anna Mary (Grosso) Squarzini. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lucy Ann (Accardo) Squarzini; children Dorothy and Michael Miller of Hollis, New Hampshire, Elizabeth and John Schanz of Villanova, Pennsylvania, and Catherine and Kevin Drahozal of Reston, Virginia; grandchildren John Schanz Jr., Catherine Miller, Michael Schanz, Caroline Miller, Grace Drahozal, Emily Schanz, Lucie Drahozal, and Anna Drahozal; brother Ernest (Gail) Squarzini; nephews Ernest (Suzanne) Squarzini, Michael (Melissa) Squarzini, Matthew (Catherine) Squarzini; and his favorite mother-in-law, Anna Accardo (GG). Joe graduated from Regis High School in New York City in 1957 and earned a Bachelor’s of Engineering (Electrical) from Manhattan College in Riverdale, New York. In 1961, he began working for IBM in Poughkeepsie, New York. He served his country as an Air Force Captain during the Vietnam War (1965-1968). After being honorably discharged, he returned to IBM. He enjoyed a successful career as a technical executive for IBM, Satellite Business Systems, General Electric, and UUNET, traveling the globe and working with many talented and wonderful people. He retired in 1998 and embarked on an almost two-decade odyssey which included: never-ending joy from his eight grandchildren; boating up and down the Intra-Coastal on his cherished, Victory at Sea, with his First Mate, Lucy; his many, MANY hobbies…..fishing, target shooting, cameras, fixing watches, ham radio, and tech support for everyone, especially his First Mate. Throughout Joe’s life, he gave of his time, talent, and treasure to countless charities and organizations for which he cared. His larger-than-life presence and wit will be deeply missed, and never forgotten. Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM and from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon, Virginia. A funeral mass will be held at 12:00 Noon on Friday, April 21, 2017 at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Great Falls, Virginia, followed by burial at Fairfax Memorial Park.
